a used Honda Civic, Mazda 626, Mazda Protege, etc. Something that is fun to drive but reliable and decent on gas.

Isn't 16 a bit young to have a car?

i have to disagreeee on a protege being reliable.

Nothing, and I mean it. Unless she absolutely needs it (can't get to school without it- bus), then don't give her one. She needs to earn it, otherwise she will have no respect for it.

 But if you incist on getting one anyways, The new style beatle with a Turbo Diesel is the way to go. There is no back seat, it gets great fuel economy, cheap to operate, girls love being seen in them, and they are very crash worthy. Rate very high by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

You also need to talk to your insurance person;
figure the insurance on your vehicles will at the least Double.

Drivers education will help, some, both for her Safety, and insurance.

I suggest a big car, not painted red.

from my expereience ALL girls are bad drivers, so dont get her anything too big cuz she gonna drive worse. damn car insurance ppl, i was at statefarm and since it was the 2nd time i was building i quote i forget to change the F to M and was really surprised when i saw how much cheaper it was than geico. i was ready to switch over when i realized the sex was F. Dam car insurace ppl charge guys more cuz more guys have insurance than girls.

I wouldnt be buying my kid a car at all...they can earn the $$ themselves and buy it when they have the $$$ saved up

Teenage girls (and most women for that matter) are proven bad drivers. Some things you should consider when purchasing her first car:

1. How will she react when avoiding an accident? Does she have superior reaction skills, like that Indy racer chick? If not, stick with front wheel drive, its much harder to spin.
2. DO NOT get her a manual as her FIRST car. This is a big nono. If you want her to attempt to talk on the cell phone, eat french fries, shift, change radio stations, and pay attention to the road all at once, be my guest. But, if I was in ur position, I would stick with an automatic so that its ONE less thing to be doing in the car.
3. And speaking of things to be doing in the car.... You may want to stick with something that has a really small or non-existant back seat
4. No more than 250 horsepower!!! Unless you get a car pre-1980 (aka a tank) You are already giving her a death machine, give her to option to abuse it (ie speeding, passing unsafely, etc)
5. Anything 1991 or newer will definatelty have airbags, some cars older than that may have them too, but in '91 it was mandated.
6. Only buy her a car worth as much as you would be willing to flush down the toilet at one time. Depending on the girl (though its usually the spoiled brats in this case), they have been known to go through a few cars before getting the whole idea of driving down...
7. Also, don't buy American unless you are stupid... Think about your daughter first, then be patriotic later...

Something with a huge back seat for when I meet up with her.
So you'll both have enough room to sit with your desktop replacement laptops and have your LANparty, right? 😉

A recent Camry or Corolla is plenty safe and maintenance won't be as high as a Volvo or BMW. Plus, they get decent gas mileage and they're not overly exciting cars (i.e. no "let's go cruising in the Camry!"). There is the problem of the ability to give too many friends a ride though, that someone else here mentioned.

This

Or better yet?

I stick by my previous post though. I did not buy my first car, and in truth, I am so thankful to my parents for that. It allowed me to save a lot of money when I was a teen. On the other hand, I did get a piece of sh!t, but it had 4 wheels and it moved, so I was happy. Every kid should start out with a crappy car. It will only make you take care of and appreciate things more later.

And this whole no back seat thing? It's pointless. If she was really all about that, a back seat isn't going to make a difference. She's going to find a way regardless if she wants to. I had a back seat; doesn't mean I was a pornaholic. If you raised your kids right, they will make the right decisions.

Get her a Badonkadonk!

JL421 Badonkadonk Land Cruiser/Tank

Carries cargo or a crew of up to five internally or on the roof.

Piloted from within the armored shell or from an exposed standing position through the hatch.

6hp Tecumseh gasoline engine, top speed 40 mph.

Includes head/tail and turn signal lights, trim and underbody lighting.

400 watt premium sound with PA system, plush interior, and external camera.

Get your daughter the most reliable and safe thing you can find for $1,000-$2,000. That way you don't have a lot of money invested in the car. She can learn to drive in it. If she has a fender bender or two, it's not a major deal. Even if she does wreck the car...as long as she's ok, you wouldn't be out a lot of money. I've seen quite a few teenagers(both guys and girls) who really don't know how to drive properly when they first get their license. Their parents shell out $15,000-$20,000 on a car and it is wrecked within 6 months. 🙁 Just my .02.....

..yup. give her bus fare and let her earn her own car and insurance. My next door neighbour did that and the kid decided not to drive till 18. At that point she had a job and payed for the whole works her self. And has a much greater understanding of real life economics rather then a spoiled expectation of parental dependency.

89+ Volvo 740 with the 8 valve 4 cyl. Nearly impossible to kill, easy to drive, super safe, and slow as s#it. The perfect car for a new driver.
