Eastern Asians got it right, the bow is the way to go.

No contact with the other party necessary.
A bow or a head nod would work for me, though I think that some of those cultures take it a liiittle too far with all the rules, and the durations of greetings.
You exist, and I know that you exist. My acknowledgement of your existence is quite implicit in the fact that I'm speaking to you. Five hours of elaborate greetings isn't really necessary. :p

Side note: I much prefer handshakes with women to handshakes with men. At least in my experience, with women, it's done as a simple type of greeting. With men, it's a competition to test bone density.

(And a passing thought on these various interesting behaviors: If one person does it, it's a mild obsessive mental disorder. If everyone does it, it's a custom.)

Do the light hand wave gesture thing you do like when you're signaling thank you to someone who stops to let you cross a road or something.

Circle hand motion without touching, then say "be well."

At least people who saw Demolition man will think it's funny. Everybody else will think you're an ass though.

I'm a bit of a germaphobe after being a medic and years of infectious disease classes, biochemistry didn't help much nor did working in the lab at the hospital. There are some really scary things just running around looking for a host.

I tend to avoid handshakes a bit, but not to the extent of being Monkish about it. I would think the fist bump would be the best alternative.
