They are apparently unreasonable so this is the only time I would suggest not speaking to them directly as they have already proven that this is not going to work.

Every time you have a complaint call the rental office and call the cops. Start keeping track of all calls on paper to keep a record. Eventually they will be evicted.

That being said, those crazy people will know who got them evicted and will not be too happy so you will probably have to move either way.

Back when I didn't know any better, I lived in apartments. Wife and I had two kids.
Someone tried to steal my motorcycle (alarmed) twice. They messed up the ignition both times. The stole the wheels off my car once (had wheel locks). I complained to the management each time and all they would say is that "they had security on". I figured security was the one doing the stealing.
After the last attempt on the motorcycle, I told them we were moving as the apartments were not safe. They said they wouldn't let me break the lease. I told them my family was more important than a few dollars and we moved. I didn't get my deposit back but they never came after me for the rest.

It is a 13mo lease, they give us a ~$150 a month "break" for having the lease, if we break it we have to pay back the "break" they gave us each month

Screw it, I would move and make them take you to court to recover the fees. Just show them the police report where they came and smelled pot and the apartment paperwork showing your complaint.

Just find another apartment, move in, and tell the other place to ... well you know what.

If you are living in an apartment it's not unreasonable for a neighbor's volume to be heard or even felt in your place next door.

Your likely only real solution. You can dick around a bit, try the cops or talking reasonably to people, but in the end - you'll need to prove that the apartment complex is not providing a reasonable dwelling in order to break the lease without paying the rest of it off. I would start taking pictures, videotaping, audio recording, and writing down accounts of how you are handling it now.

my point of saying it was the exact same audio gear was that we still listen at the same volume level we always have and that we have never gotten complaints on before. also, the schedule of a 3yo shouldn't matter, but when she is sleeping, do you think we are blaring loud music/movies? hell we don't do that when she's awake either... we also bought those planter stands to get the speakers off the floor as a "just in case"

Also, just FYI, one of the people that work in the apt office happens to live next door to us and she hasn't ever heard a peep from us.

After sleeping on this issue, I think we are just going to have to find some way to break the lease. What they are doing HAS to be some form of harassment and if the apt complex wants to play any "break the lease penalty" card then I think we'll get an attorney involved.

go back and read my earlier post. There are certainly clauses that can force your landlord to break the lease without penalty. Simply put "they are not providing a habitable living space for their tenants."

Done. I just went through this only 1 month ago, breaking a 12 month lease only 6 months in because of horrible neighbors. Of course, it "helps" that our neighbors were also acting belligerent towards the cops when they showed up, to our landlord, and threatened our lives. but who knows, same may work for you...

best option is to get them evicted. You pretty much have to move, regardless. You'll never feel safe in that place no matter where they are. Get them evicted to force them to face their own worthlessness a bit.

Eviction takes time though. I had problems with my neighbor below me with his smoking was making my apartment unbearable. Not that he was a bad guy to me or anything but I was willing to move to a different apartment in the complex to avoid it but I didn't because I learned he was being evicted for not paying his rent. Hell, the guy was even stealing electricity. He would run an extension cord down to the laundry room. When I went to talk to the landlord about him, the landlord pulled out a severed extension cable from his desk that he claimed from previous incidents. Despite this it still took a few months for the eviction to go through.

The problem you have is you expect apartment life to be what you'd do in life in every unit. This is a PRIVLEDGE you don't have. Expect noise from 5am to roughly midnight during workdays. The cheaper your place is, expect more noise, smells, etc...neighbors smoke? You may have some tobacco coming through.

Your 3yo needs her sleep so you don't play your TV so much...well tough shit, it's 9pm and Heroes is on...I have a right to listen to it loud enough to enjoy 10' away...sorry my wall backs up to your bedroom.

I was a considerate neighbor when I rented apartments. I can't fault a neighbor though buying a subwoofer though, nor the guy that works 4am to noon if he wakes me up early each day.

The you mention 'illegal' activity...if you really expect to live anywhere where all your neighbors are totally legal, you are pretty deluded.

Like I said get a house and stop making excuses or maybe you are actually the one trolling.

A few months ago my wife and I attended a neighborhood watch meeting. As homeowners, our block is slowly becoming sh!t because the houses are all slowly becoming rentals w/ trash moving in. Unfortunately for us, we have loud ass neighbors to the left and drug dealers to the right. Anyways during the meeting we all discussed what our options were to help "clean up" the neighborhood. The lady that was heading up the meeting mentioned that Appleton implemented a nuisance abatement law. It basically states if there is "X" amount instances when the police have to visit these rental properties, the city is allowed to force the landlord to evict the problem tenants. If the landlord doesn't, the city can actually fine or even take over the landlord's properties.

I've gone the route of talking to both my neighbors in person but they just don't seem to care. After some of the residents and myself started calling the police, the neighbors have toned it down a bit.........

Let's see, having been in similar situations in the past, here's a checklist of things to do.

-- Keep calling the police and lodging complaints.
-- Stay away from the neighbors, period.
-- If the police & landlord won't get involved for what's there... make shit up...
---- "Yeah, I'd like to put in an anonymous tip that there's a drug dealer dealing out of 103B..."
---- Another good thing to do is have a pot plant growing in a small planter, and place it down outside said neighbor's door before the police show up. Even if the neighbor discovers it, odds are they'll take it inside (Woot! Free grow!), at which point when the cops show up they'll be busted not only for possession (with intent to sell) but also being a grow house.
