Virtual reality. People will be wearing an eye visor that lets them walk around in the public chatroom, which could be a bar or a coffee shop like on Friends. Of course, you will still have the ability to change or forge your appearance as you see fit, even change your sex by a click of the button. But it will be like using the holodeck on Star Trek only in your own living room.
