IMO that AMD next gen cards wont come until next year so will they price drop there gpu further or they are in a safe side?

Plz dont flame in this topic and i just want to know opinions.

When their next gen cards are coming is an unknown. Unless you have some evidence that you are basing your prediction on?

As far as their next move, it's not rocket science. They will need to lower prices.

I have stated IMO(in my point of view) but it is pretty much safe to say that AMD next gen will come next year because they also took around 5-6 months to answer Nvidia GTX 7xx and this is just a prediction.

What really i think is that AMD really need to focus on there gpu power consumption and efficiency even if they have to sacrifice a bit of performance and make it cheaper is they only key to survive.
 
Yeah, cut the 290 to $289 and the 290X to $329 and call it a day? It also unfortunately sounds like AMD is going to release a 290X with super high clocks and water cooled soon.

Asetek press release about the AIO cooler states that shipments will begin in H1 2015.

but it will consume more power though.Even know i am seeing in forums that AMD user are also demanding for efficiency and lower power consumption.People who have mid range rigs wont even look at R9 290X or R9 290 because it consume a lot power and not enough efficient like GTX 970.

I sure that everyone will agree that right now GTX 970 is the best choice for any Mid range or high end user.

If all they can do is release a 500mm2++ GPU based on GCN

Maxwell will be GPUs Core architecture. Ever since Intel released that architecture, AMD have been struggling to keep up with Intels CPUs.

If you look at this on a short timeframe, AMD can do ok against Nvidia if they sell the upcoming card cheap. But they will suffer in the long run, because you need a solid architecture to design smaller more efficient and cheaper chips.
In the end it could be 100W Nvidia GPUs matching 300W AMD GPUs. Maxwell is almost there and price reduction alone won`t push people to buy AMDs hot and power hungry chips.

It will be very damaging for AMD if they don`t have a new architecture ready to take on Maxwell.

AMD really needs time and work hard on this.They cant afford to release another power hungry and inefficient gpu.

I am just saying though if AMD change there architecture than Mantle was a just of time and money for AMD.
 
As I've said in the main review thread, AMD's GCN 2.0 needs to be very efficient or they are dead.

Efficiency is king in notebooks & mobiles, and that's a huge market they cannot afford to constantly lose.

In the short-term, their only option is to price-cut and that will hurt their profits. AMD needs their GPU division to make the money, because their R&D for CPUs & APUs are funded by the only profitable division: Graphics.

R9 290X is already a very dense chip of 440mm2. GTX 980 is what, 15% above R9 290X? A 500mm2+ chip makes very much sense that they are actually currently just scaling up the exisiting GCN architecture to 500mm2 chip to match or surpass the GTX 980 by 10% ish.

So now you got
A) A bigger chip that cost more money to make than the 400mm2 GTX 980
B) Since its the same architecture as R9 290X, you now have what, 350W instead of 290W R9 290X. And its dense.

So what does AMD do? They partner up with Asetek like described in this article, to be able to cool off this dense and hot chip.

So now you are looking at more silicon vs the GTX 980 and you are going to third party companies to make the cooling solution. All of this cost more money takes a bite off your profit.

In the end, you have a problem: Either selling the GPU for $550 to match GTX 980s price and have extremely little profit left. Or you sell the GPU for more than the GTX 980 and use a ton of money on marketing to convince people they should buy this resource heavy GPU instead of Nvidia`s Maxwell card that draw a lot less power and runs cool.

This will not work out in the end. The reduced profit, the reduced sales. GPU department is what is keeping AMD from going over the cliff since their CPU division have been bleeding a lot of money due to Intel`s Core chips.
If Maxwell becomes a problem just like that with GPUs, AMD are facing a real threat to their operation.

At the moment, probably the best they could do is put out a large gpu with enough brute force to take on Maxwell. Even though power use will go through the roof, that new cooler they have should give enough headroom. If they can beat Maxwell on performance by a significant amount, and at a low enough cost, it should sell.

However, even with a new architecture in the works, AMD will have a hard time bringing power use down and outperforming Nvidia's future Big Maxwell.
 
I think after reading Tom's hardware writeup on the 970/980 power usage and his conclusion that there's no magic architectural design that was making them less power hungry, AMD should go back and fine tune their powertune.
 
I am pretty sure there next move is to drop prices and keep working on their own next generation on cards. Kind of the same thing that happens every single generation when one of them gets their new cards out first. Not sure what the wide scale panic is about, this is not new territory for either company.
 
Isn't the 285 recently released supposed to be a revised and more efficient architecture, although not on the scale of Maxwell vs Kepler of course? But I agree, AMD has backed themselves into a corner by committing so much to mantle that it probably makes it hard to go away from GCN.

For the short term, they still have the lower and mid range on a price/performance basis, but if nVidia comes out with a 960 priced in the 200 to 250 range, it could really hurt AMD. But, yea, seems like the efficiency of Maxwell will pretty much finish off AMD in the mobile dgpu market.

Edit: I am not sure that the dgpu part of AMD is really making that much profit. Isn't it the console chips that are making the profit? Or are those counted in the CPU division. In any case, the console revenue should not be affected, so AMD should be OK for a while. I see a real danger if ARM or Intel gets the next console contract though.

They need to device a solution to disable DP FP logic like Titan can. Then work out in their power gating like NV did on Maxwell and voila, "doom and gloom for AMD" turned back into normal.

GCN isnt as remotely bad as some people need to make you think here. Its just NV that found out a way to turn gaming load's inefficiencies into their favor. The perf/watt gains in GPGPU from Kepler to Maxwell are at best the ones gained from GCN 1.1 to 1.2 (as in: almost none).


But oh well, NV achieved the magic number and the low tdp mantra will be repeated nonstop. Catering more to the gamers than the HPC crowd with Maxwell was an awkward move IMO, the big bucks come from the latter.

Now, this is the post of the day.
AMD has been is worst conditions, remember 8800 GTX and 8800 GT? 8800 GTX while not as frugal as GTX 980, it had enormous performance compared to previous generations and it's competition from ATI. That was a huge mountain to climb and it was achievable.
 
Here's what I think AMD is going to do next:
Step #1: Major price drops on existing cards so that they're remotely competitive
Step #2: Release full-fat Tonga (R9 285X) at $249
Step #3: Release an absurdly oversized and power-hungry R9 390X with closed-loop water cooling. This will be designed to appeal to gamers who want the absolute best single-card performance and don't care about power consumption.
Step #4: Move to 20nm as soon as possible, hopefully in conjunction with improved PowerTune and/or a fully revamped GCN 2.0 architecture
