Ever heard the phrase "thats all she wrote"
What does that phrase have to do with "murder she wrote"?
Nothing.
The Angela Lansbury character in the TV show
Murder, She Wrote was based on the prolific English detective novelist Agatha Christie's murder solving biddy Miss Marple.
Christie wrote 17 novels starring Miss Marple. The first was called
Murder At the Vicarage and the last,
Sleeping Murder. In all of them, she solved murders. A 1961 play based on one of her Miss Marple books was called
Muder, She Said. Sensing a theme?
The phrase "Murder, She Wrote" has no intrinsic meaning. People who think it does are misinformed. People who hear other people use it and think it has some a priori meaning are both misinformed
and gullible.
"That's all she wrote" means, roughly, "it's over". "Murder, she wrote" means nothing.
That's all she wrote.
