--r3mix is old and crappy. the presets, originally the dibrom settings went further on the testing of switches and made the best quality transparent bit saving encodes possible. Notice, BEST bit saving transparent encode. Dibrom was so gracious in his work, he didn't want his name attached to the presets, hence, --alt-preset xxx.

edt -- if --r3mix sounds fine to you, then by all means stick with it. If you don't think or hear a difference then why does it matter? Perhaps the differences are between a 1 gig cpu and 1.2 gig cpu. Most day to day tasks and users can't tell the bump 200mhz. dunno.
