unjust definition varies....a lot of people thought the vietnam war was unjust, but i dont remember actual genocide. i agree, tough question, not so cut and dry.
 
Korean War...... it changed soooo much in the world.

There are a number of reasons to consider a war the "worst" war. In the War Between the States we have our first us of Total War (i.e. war waged against women and children) by a Western power.


On June 20, 1862, one year into the war, General McClellan, commanding the Army of the Potomac, wrote Lincoln a letter imploring him to see to it that the war was conducted according to ?the highest principles known to Christian civilization? and to avoid targeting the civilian population to the extent that that was possible. For third world countries, I'd say sure. But not for the US and Europe. There's no reason for AIDS to exist at all in advanced countries, because it is completely preventable. I can say with 99.9% certainty that I will NEVER contract AIDS.

Force Protection CONdition is the military security ranking system. FPCON Alpha is the lowest, Delta is the highest. Delta means the attack has happened. Charlie means it is coming for certain so lock and load...
 
The Mongolian wars led by Genghis Khan were also pretty bad. He devastated a number of cities both in the east and west. His death is considered one of the random occurences that saved western civilization.

even though you ruled out the 2nd world war. B/c of that one war we ended up with:

Cold war
Israel
Nuclear weapons
the communization of half of germany and eastern europe
virtual distruction of Japan
huge advances in technology
complete re-writing of the way wars are fought
baby boomers

so i'd tend to think WWII had the biggest world impact.

No way. Show me your source for those statistics... Approximately 3million die each year from Aids worldwide

I strongly disagree that Vietnam was the worst war. There was a loss of American lives, but there have been single battles in past wars that took more American lives than were lost in 10 years in Vietnam. From the American perspective, the Civil War has to have been the worst. But, at the same time, it was the beginning of modern America. Prior to the Civil War, we were a bunch of individual states, united under one constitution. The result of the Civil War was that we became a great nation and would/will be a great nation well into the future.

Worldwide, WWI would probably have to be the worst war.

For a group of people, perhaps the undeclared war on Indians was the worst of all time, reducing the population by 90%.
