It's difficult to think in terms of wars pre 18th century really... I would have to say it would need to be an unjust war first off. That would bring in WW2 and the holocaust. Also the crusades. And what I do mean by unjust is that the agressors are killing people for the sole purpose of killing them, such as genocide, killing off people who pose no threat at all, innocent people. tough question.

unjust definition varies....a lot of people thought the vietnam war was unjust, but i dont remember actual genocide. i agree, tough question, not so cut and dry.

Korean War...... it changed soooo much in the world.

I'd have to say it's the one many in the USA are itching to get into right at the moment..

Should be interesting. FYI, if the US military goes to FPCON Charlie, the attack IScoming at any time, in any place, in any force...

What's FPCON Charlie and will the public know when/if the military goes there?

The civil war. Large number of casualties, all of them our own.🙁

There are a number of reasons to consider a war the "worst" war. In the War Between the States we have our first us of Total War (i.e. war waged against women and children) by a Western power.

On June 20, 1862, one year into the war, General McClellan, commanding the Army of the Potomac, wrote Lincoln a letter imploring him to see to it that the war was conducted according to ?the highest principles known to Christian civilization? and to avoid targeting the civilian population to the extent that that was possible. Lincoln replaced McClellan a few months later and ignored his letter. - from The Real Lincoln

Before replying to this thread, please think about your answer. It's easy to say WWII on the basis of the Holocaust, but I feel that there has been worse. Worse is not just death but entire social devastation and change across the board.

I say World War One was the worst war in history...

ditto

We're already there...

i would say war on AIDS. last year alone, more people die from AIDS than ww1 and ww2 combined

For third world countries, I'd say sure. But not for the US and Europe. There's no reason for AIDS to exist at all in advanced countries, because it is completely preventable. I can say with 99.9% certainty that I will NEVER contract AIDS.

Force Protection CONdition is the military security ranking system. FPCON Alpha is the lowest, Delta is the highest. Delta means the attack has happened. Charlie means it is coming for certain so lock and load...

The Mongolian wars led by Genghis Khan were also pretty bad. He devastated a number of cities both in the east and west. His death is considered one of the random occurences that saved western civilization.

2% of the US population back in 1860 ended up dieing in the Civil War

WOW!

on a per captia basis , that has to be the worse

plus the fact that brothers fought brothers

i vote American Civil War

Let us all just become complacent again and have the Jihad kill more Americans.

Another instance of people killing each other in the name of religion.

even though you ruled out the 2nd world war. B/c of that one war we ended up with:

Cold war
Israel
Nuclear weapons
the communization of half of germany and eastern europe
virtual distruction of Japan
huge advances in technology
complete re-writing of the way wars are fought
baby boomers

so i'd tend to think WWII had the biggest world impact.

No way. Show me your source for those statistics... Approximately 3million die each year from Aids worldwide

8 1/2 million died in WWI alone

20 million died in Russia... The population of Russia TODAY is 150 million...

I strongly disagree that Vietnam was the worst war. There was a loss of American lives, but there have been single battles in past wars that took more American lives than were lost in 10 years in Vietnam. From the American perspective, the Civil War has to have been the worst. But, at the same time, it was the beginning of modern America. Prior to the Civil War, we were a bunch of individual states, united under one constitution. The result of the Civil War was that we became a great nation and would/will be a great nation well into the future.

Worldwide, WWI would probably have to be the worst war.

For a group of people, perhaps the undeclared war on Indians was the worst of all time, reducing the population by 90%.
