before the 20th century, i would say the wars between The Roman Emipre most notably the Battle of the Catalunian Fields or or also known as the Battle of Chalons. If the Huns had won, Europe will be vastly different than what it is today.

during the 20th century, it would be WWII
in the Battle of Stalingrad, around 1 million people died
the social implications of WWII is huge

I strongly disagree that Vietnam was the worst war. There was a loss of American lives, but there have been single battles in past wars that took more American lives than were lost in 10 years in Vietnam. From the American perspective, the Civil War has to have been the worst. But, at the same time, it was the beginning of modern America. Prior to the Civil War, we were a bunch of individual states, united under one constitution. The result of the Civil War was that we became a great nation and would/will be a great nation well into the future.

Worldwide, WWI would probably have to be the worst war.

For a group of people, perhaps the undeclared war on Indians was the worst of all time, reducing the population by 90%.

I say Vietnam for its lingering effects on American politics and our society. Doubt about our government's ability to act in our best insterest are present today (especially given the looming conflict in Iraq).

The War on Drugs, because it's the most pointless war. Many, if not the majority, of the problems with drugs stem only from the fact that they are illegal.

The Franco-Prussian war was pretty bad in terms of consequences. It knocked France off the top, and put Germany on the map.

The Punic Wars were pretty brutal, and each one was worse than the last. The first war was a stalemate. In the second war an 80,000 soldier Roman army was completely wiped out in a single battle (an unheard of battle casualty count for the age). By the time of the third war, Rome decided there wasn't going to be a Fourth Punic War and killed every inhabitant of Carthage (the worst systematic slaughter of non-combatants in history until the Holocaust) and plowed the ground with salt to make the area surrounding the city uninhabitable :Q

I would have to say WWI only because it directly led to WWII. Take into account the devestation, loss of life, and atrocities commited as a direct result of one arch-duke being assassinated and I think it is a no-brainer.
