The first computer thread got me thinking about what was the first thing I used a computer for.
The first time I sat in front of a computer was after school in highschool. Some friends were in the computer lab (Apple IIs) and I stopped in to say hi. They were programming some cool graphics stuff in BASIC so I asked how they did that. A guy explained how his code worked, flipping back and forth between the code and the graphics output. I watched him for a few minutes and then sat down and tried writing a similar program on the machine next to his. It worked, eventually. That was that.
Looking back on it now it seems strange that the very first thing I did on a computer was program, not word process, play a game, or use a spreadsheet.
What was your first time like?
