Why has it taken longer to catch Bin Laden than it took to defeat the Japanese Empire? Why are we discussing exit strategies for a war that should have been resolved years ago?

Forgetting, of course, that it took us decades to get our of Japan and Europe. What? We are still there! Impossible. We need a Dim in charge - they will get us out of Europe and Japan! What? We just had Dims in charge for the past thirty years! Didn't fix anything? Amazed! They said they fixed everything and invented the Internet.

We aren't in Japan and Germany as occupying powers and haven't been for decades. Where is Bin Laden? Where is the plan to go after Al Queda? Why are you repeating the disortion of what Gore said about the internet? Why do you hate America?

We're still in those countries because we don't trust their neighbors or do people forget this?

And it's pretty pathetic that people are trying to compare this war to WWII.

Yes, let's compare the man who couldn't defend his gold-plated toilets to regimes that killed more people than Iraq has total.

You're the one who implied the US is occupying Japan and Germany. How do you figure we've had Dems in charge for the last thirty years? Dems have controlled the Whitehouse for only twelve of the last thirty years. Do you believe being in the military is the only way to serve your country? Why.

When was the last time Iraq attacked American soil?

I don't want to get into this WWII vs. War on Terror argument... But that was a silly comparison.

When did Germany ever attack American soil? Wasn't it the Japanese? So why did we go after Germany? Oh yeah... because they were allied with Japan.

Why go after Iraq in the war on Terror? Oh yeah... because they had terrorists operating there.

Hopefully someone else has pointed this out by now, but Germany declared war on us because they thought it would get Japan to declare on Russia. After the German's declared war on us, we declared war on them. Please for the love of god read a histroy book just once in your life.

If I understand the comparison correctly, this is like asking what our exit plan was on September 12th, 2001. Did we have one at that point? Did anyone expect one to exist? I think we all know the answer to both questions. But it's not September 12th, 2001 anymore...it's over 4 years later, and still no exit strategy. A better WWII comparison might ask what our exit strategy on December 8th, 1945 was. Of course we all know that there was little need for any exit strategy, as we had already won. In fact, the war had been over for months and actual reconstruction was under way.

I think this comparison is silly, and really nothing more than a tool of Iraq war supporters to feed their egos. But it makes no sense to really compare them, from either side. Fighting nation states is different than fighting disjointed groups of insurgents or terrorists. But if there is one way you can compare them, it's in terms of planning. WWII was not fought in this half-ass, seat of the pants, yeehaw kind of way Bush supporters seem to think Iraq NEEDS to be fought. The lessons from WWII go way beyond how to fight two powerful enemies on two different fronts...it shows that even enemies with incredible power can be beaten with intelligent planning. Our leaders didn't just wake up one day and decide landing at Normandy sounded good...they had it mapped out as part of a comprehensive strategy for winning the war. We could learn something from that.

Because ....OH.... intelligent one. Germany due to the Axis treaty declared war on the US of A after Japan declared war on the US of A by attacking the US of A at Pearl Harbor!

Was that when Japan bombed us and we invaed Mexico? I forget how that went, nice troll kiddo.

You mean when Japan bombed us and we attacked Germany? Germany was not a 'real' threat to us... I mean I can't believe that we pre-emptively attacked the innocent Germans.

Germany was a very real threat to the US before Pearl Harbor, most Americans tended to not notice as they were being watched by U-Boats as they patrolled the coast and spies on land. They were happy to leave the war as "Europe's Problem". Germany had also tried negotiate with the Mexican government to allow German troops to invade the US from the southwest. Thankfuly the Mexicans had enough sense to tell them to piss off.
thats was ww1.

Fine, When was the last time Iraq attacked Franece, USA, or GB?

Good comeback, although technically Iraq fired on us during the 90's, both the US and GB, and continued to attack Israel by proxy.

That is not reason enough to invade btw

especially since they attacked "us" on their own territory.

And Iraq not abiding by their cease fire terms is not the same thing. In essence, if you sign a cease fire and never intend (or stop) to cease, you are still at war. If I recall during Gulf War I Iraq actually did declare war against the US as a symbolic gesture, but war nonetheless.

So, keep defending Saddam as much as you want. The fact of the matter is, he never respected the terms of the cease fire, hence, we were still at war.

At this point in time in WWII, the war was over, won, finished, mission accomplished, the Axis vanquished. There was no need for an exit plan at this point in the conflict.

Tell that to the 10,000 men that gave their lives in Germany and Japan fighting post war insurgencies. In Southern Germany some units fought for many months after the end of the war killing thousand of Allied soldiers. Hell, up to a few decades ago there were still random Japanese remnants killing farmers on remote Asian islands. Should we pull our supprt of Japan for this...

i asked for documentation for this before and never got a lik, but i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and ask again.

we could've left before the 1940's were out, if not for the soviet union.

what all you fools miss is that we did not have troops patroling berlin and tokyo doing peace keeping, they were there as a standing army to prevent the soviets from getting a little aggressive.
