Gay marriage without question. The Evangelicals were terrified, and the issue was unpopular with the overwhelming majority of the voting public. Though Kerry claimed that he was against gay marriage, it was still a position of his party, and that killed him.
There were numerous other issues, but I feel strongly that without the gay marriage issue in the public's face he could have stood a chance after the debates. Neither candidate was truly appealing to the American public, but the gay marriage issue allowed Bush to claim moral superiority.
