I want to change my answer to Anandtech (make me elite mods!!! I'm doing the asskissing).

The thermos is the single greatest invention! Not only does it keep things hot or cold, it even figures out which ones to keep hot and which to keep cold. All this w/o a microchip! Pretty incredible huh? 🙂

I would have to say the computer. Why? Well, where else can we value the importance of toilet paper? Toilet paper is #2, because wiping your arse with leaves really leaves some nasty rashes, especially if you don't check if the leaves have bugs...not just any toilet paper...the quilted kind, darnit!

Some might say that God is the greatest invention of all time, whereas others would argue that God is the greatest discovery.

On Ne Change Pas (Céline Dion)

No greatest invention of all time. Plain and simple. Everything is made up of something else already invented or discovered. Look at computers. They use circuits, transistors, etc. Stuff that was all invented before. Technology builds on itself.

Nice to finally agree with BenSyWalker about something (😉) - the printing press is easily the greatest invention. It has enabled us to spread education and culture to the masses. Every other invention follows from it.

Napalm

Damn Napalm I was just about to say the same thing. The Movable Type Printing Press led to the "enlightenment" of the masses. Before that, education and knowledge was only in the hands of the rich and powerful.

Good call Ben. 🙂
