Inventions are synergistic. That is, they build on previous inventions, so it would be difficult to name one "greatest" invention. For really good insight into this, check out the James Burke's
Connections series, from PBS. If you're lucky, PBS or Discovery will run it again, sometime soon, but it is well worth renting or buying for a number of good nights of entertainment and learning.
