What VOIP service do you use?

I just spent some time looking around the Ooma site. Looks pretty good to me. I would probably go with the Telo model because it's much nicer looking. I don't need the BT or GV features though.

I think I could get by real well with the basic feature set. I'll have to run through the site at least one more time for it to all sink in. Battery backup in case of a power failure would be nice though.

Voip.ms has been fascinating to learn about. They are like a phone service on steroids...the amount of call customization ability is remarkable. I'm looking forward to adding creditors who have my number under someone else's account and routing their number blocks to receive a 'the number you have dialed has been disconnected' recording. 🙂

Last night I got my pap2's unlocked and working (actually I paid someone on dlsreports to do it 😛), and then ported my land line to voip.ms. In fact I just got an email saying the request has already been made to my carrier.

Same here.

On the same topic, what's a good SIP client for Windows? So far I'm just using it on my iPod Touch when I'm travelling in a roaming area using Acrobits but haven't really seen any decent Windows clients.

I'm using X-Lite 3.0 from counterpath. Only 4.0 beta is on their site tho, which really sucks, so you'll have to find it on the net. I wasn't able to get pangolin to work.

I'm still with Ooma for the 2nd year now, phone bills are a thing of the past. The service has only been down for 2 days out of the entire time that I've had it.

So glad I switched, Vonage was not worth the $.

I used to use voip.ms, and I was very pleased with their service & price.

Though I got tired of having a "landline", so I just got a cheap long distance package on my cell and that's all I use now.

Thanks! I did try X-lite a while back but for some reason it wouldn't connect to the voip.ms servers. I gave up after about 5 minutes though. I'll have to revisit it and try it again.

I had it up and running very quick...thankfully because I was a complete noob.

The first 5 settings above are the only ones I personally set and it worked right away, the others were preset as defaults. (Maybe you had a firewall permission setting issue that you didn't realize?)

I just switched from Vonage to Ooma based on various posts. It works well but it has a wicked delay that makes talking rather awkward. Does anyone else using Ooma have this? Vonage was perfect on my system, but something funky is going on with Ooma it seems.

Do you have the latest firmware? I don't use ooma but vaguely remember reading something about this. (/edit: that might have been echo issues.)

Try adjusting your Ooma's built in QOS.
In addition, make sure that your unit is connected to your high speed modem and the network/router should be connected to your Ooma. (Modem > Ooma > Router)

I just read some stuff on the Ooma forums.. I'm going to try the QoS option, and I'll look at the firmware while I'm at it. I somehow thought it updated itself when I installed the system, but that could be a bad assumption I made.

Update: So far voip.ms has been outstanding. Porting took 17 days.

I love being able to have calls simultaneously ring in the house as well as to my pay-as-you-go cell, in case I'm out and don't want to miss a particular call.

I also made small modifications to the exterior phone box to wire the house for internal voip only, a nice convenience.

I can record calls but unfortunately not automatically. I have to hit the record button on x-lite softphone, which isn't so bad.

Lastly, no more robo collections calls at all hours from a debt collector who for some reason has this number in their db for someone else. I routed their number block to receive "this number has been disconnected". 😀

Overall, I'll pay ~$9/mo (with e-911) instead of $48 for my landline.
