That's what I was thinking. Here's a system that is comparable to the TD combo that comes close to meeting your overall goal of $1k with a much better PSU:
DFI LP DK X58-T3eH6 $219.99
Intel Core i7 920 $279.99
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800 94.99
XFX HD-489A-ZDFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 199.99
GIGABYTE Triton 180 Black Computer Case 61.99
HITACHI 0A38016 1TB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM 74.99
PC Power & Cooling S75QB 750W Power Supply 109.99
Total $1,041.93
all prices newegg before shipping.
Not sure if you noticed it, but neither my nor TD's combo includes an optical drive. So, if you want to be able to install your OS add on an extra ~$25 for a DVD burner.
Another good PSU option is the Corsair 750TX, but I opted for the PCP&C for this build simply because I know it's a good PSU (I've owned one) and it's $10 less than the Corsair.
edit: you could also save some money with different motherboard options:
