I'm talking about Guelph, Ontario.

Absolutely terrible climate. Temperature ranges from -35 to +35. No Spring or Fall.

City is run by self-important morons intent on maintaining "small-town esthetic" in one of the fastest-growing mid-size towns in the country. As a result, residential areas are cut-off from what little commercial development is allowed. People are forced to drive out of town to shop. Masses of unoriginal, cheaply-made subdivisions popping up along highways while the downtown core slowly dies.

Zero culture.

A city council with a near fascist control on new bars, causing the already crowded bar scene to get increasingly less accessible and totally uninteresting.

The attitude of non-interest with regards to road repair from city council.

More traffic lights and pedestrian crossings than cars on the road. Lights are deliberately timed to frustrate drivers and cause traffic.

Public transportation that is seldom on time and runs on a pathetic half hour schedule.

Too few taxis. Two companies allowed to operate and a reluctant police force that dictates who is allowed to be licensed.

A population of self-important granola-types who refuse to except any commercial development whatsoever.

When deals are struck for commercial development, the contract is always awarded to shady companies and the end result is always poor.

Far, far too many Italians.

A general superiority complex, which is amusing coming from an ass-backwards city of 150,000. The residents honestly believe this city is the centre of the universe because it's the biggest town around. There is literally nothing north of the city but farming communities.

hm....can't say anything about traffic/insurance as I don't drive, but I agree with everything else haha.

Although, let me tell you the prices here aren't nearly as bad as in the Bay Area where my permanent residence is.

Cons:
Very high cost of living. How many beers can you get for 10 dollars... almost one!
Population kind of up-tight.
Ice encrusted sidewalks during the winter, the locals appear to have no problem with this.
Ultra high taxes.
Too many beggars.

Pros:
Cleanest place I've ever lived.
New opera house.
Cycle lanes, bus/electric car lanes.
Excellent Public transport.
Top class medical care.

Oslo, Norway.

High cost of living. NYC

+ taxes
taxes ? LI's taxes are worse... especially property taxes. For NYC, I'd say tolls. Yesterday we paid $10.25 in tolls for 2 bridges one way. Not to mention, the roads in NYC suck. Where's all this toll money going to ?

It sucks that where I live isn't a city :( Well, in truth, I quite enjoy a lot of the luxuries of small town living, but we do spend an awful lot of time driving to and from the city (closest is 200km, family lives 500km away).

You go to the bar on Friday night and immediately run into 4-5 people you know. And I don't know that many people to begin with.
