Also, zombies aside, it is still prudent to prepare for something bad happening. Wouldn't take much to blow up society as we know it.

A good drought would be pretty rough nowadays. How about an EMP, either terrorist or solar powered? Wreck our power grid pretty well, food transport would dry up quickly, power, fuel, water all in short supply.

To hell with zombies -- I live near Detroit and rudeguy lives near Grand Rapids. If that shit ever happens, I am heading AWAY from the rioting remnants of civilization. All Michiganders on here are free to meet me in the middle and head north to the UP with me (have family up there).

Yeah, it would. It would take quite a lot. Having a gigantic stockpile of ammo to protect your supply of water and saltine crackers isn't going to do much for you in the long run.

A good point they make is that for a society such as ours, so heavily technologically based, a natural disaster like that would affect us more than a less advanced one.

Combine that with our reliance on JIT techniques, and things would go to shit amazingly quickly if a broad swath of the country was fried.

Mmmm water and saltines...should hoard some hot sauce too. We really need a tinfoil hat emoticon...

AZ gets cold as hell at night, hot as hell during the day and has no trees for shade or to burn for warmth. Add in no AC during whatever apocalypse, and no way! UP has Lake Superior, plenty of wildlife and forest, and low population.

Primitive enough they probably won't even know anything happened: "eh, the packers game ain't on the tv? Yah, you betcha, power went out der eh? Oh ja ja." :hmm:

I think, and base it on a fairly recent history of events, that there is a reasonably good chance in any given decade that a solar storm or similar takes out a significant (read: affecting millions) portion of the US energy grid for a period of weeks or months. This opinion doesn't seem to be shared only by nut jobs who watch lots of movies, either, but reputable firms like Lloyds: http://www.lloyds.com/news-and-insi...nt-2013/solar-weather-warning-issued-for-2013.

This doesn't mean roving gangs are raping women and killing children, but it does mean the economy gets the heck slapped out of it and you're seeing people making trips to food lines.

It's true that the JIT economy is highly efficient, but indeed very vulnerable to disruption.

LOL. Zombies.

The real fear most likely is the breakdown in social order when the US Dollar loses its status as world reserve currency. When this happens, the USD will become essentially worthless. $100 might buy you bread. Think of what happened in NOLA post-Katrina but affecting everyone in the entire country.

NOLA is not a good example. There was only a fraction of the city affected and they knew where to go to get help. Even if the help wasn't great, it was there.

The real trouble is going to be when the poor realize that DC has been using them as voting puppets and has actually been the ones holding them back from not being poor. Then the revolts start happening, then the government tries to take control, then the gun nuts get in a tizzy and shit breaks loose.

I'm talking 3-4 different civil wars going at once and all for different reasons. It will be chaos.

Just purchased 500 rds of Monarch 9 mm brass this afternoon for less than $0.30/rd (including sale tax) from Academy.

I would laugh, but honestly this is why we have an ammo shortage now.... :\

Wow. Find me a good deal on 7mm 08 ammo. Tired of paying $1.50 per round (or more.)

Cheapest that I see from Academy for your caliber is $22 for 20 rds or $1.1 per round plus sale tax. Mine $0.28/rd is hand gun but yours is rifle and an odd caliber. Not sure I am familiar with it as .223/5.56, .308, .243, and others.

One nice thing about .357sig is that not many people are buying it up all the time ;)

I have a .40 barrel as well, and that pretty easy to find if I ever have to scrounge around in an apocalyptic wasteland.

Eh. I'm an optimist. I doubt there will be any civil wars in the US, I still believe the system can work if people engage it. . . Unfortunately many people are very apathetic. The only apocalyptic circumstances I am actually somewhat worried about would be Yellowstone going supervolcano all over us, or a nuclear war, or asteroid/comet/rogueplanetoid/gammarayburst/blackhole type celestial event.

Why did this require a new thread? This belongs in YAGT.

And if you were serious about this actually, I think the best handgun to have for a zombo apoc would be a .22LR or maybe a 9mm. I favor the .22 because it is cheap and really easy to get. You can carry more rounds, too.

The best common calibers to stockpile are:

.22LR
9mm
5.56x45
7.62x51

I also recommend stockpiling the following Russian calibers:

7.62x39
7.62x54r
5.45x39

As with all ammunition purchases, buy low, and buy in bulk. If you can source spam cans of Russian calibers for a good price, buy a lot. Ammunition around my area is as good as cash, and you can even make a fair amount of cash if you buy low enough.

If you're interested in having ammunition for your own personal use only, invest in a reloading setup. The only reason I haven't is because my ammunition cache is very fluid; I have a lot going in and out at any given time, and most people are only interested in buying/trading factory ammunition.

I look and look and I still haven't see a box of .22LR in any of the stores (Wal Mart, Academy, Bass Pro, etc.) that I stopped by for the last year or so.
