What type of handgun ammo to stockpile?

I have decided it is time to stockpile ammo. I have done some pretty serious research and I have determined that a zombie outbreak is imminent. I'm not talking zombie strippers... I'm talking Dawn of the Dead type zombies.

I don't like rifles. I don't own any and don't plan on buying any. So we are only talking handgun ammo. Hollow points would do more damage but they are more expensive. Since only head shots will kill zombies, is the added expense necessary? If I can get 1000 rounds of FMJ for the price of 400 JHPs, is the quantity better than the quality?

Besides the type, what volume would be a safe level? I'm thinking 1000 rounds minimum but that is a lot of weight. Should I plan on being mobile or static? If static, weight wouldn't be an issue but then what if I have to bug out?

Any help is appreciated.

You need mags, not just ammo. When will you have time to reload a mag?

1000 rounds isn't a stockpile.
Agreed...
With any ammo IMPO the FMJ is just fine for stopping power you hit it you kill it or do serious damage... To me its rather like all purpose as opposed to hollow points that while they do cause more damage they can be not so effective for penetration as they are designed for rapid expansion upon contact... Now bear in mind this is where hand gun ammo is concerned but rifle ammo with higher velocities and design of bullets it is a bit of a different story... But in this day of body armor tech all things must be considered unless its just stupid zombies you going up against...:D

With either one weight is a major concern when carrying several rounds with you... This was a major factor when the US military opted for the M16 rifle and its caliber 5.56 NATO also the 223 Remington as opposed to other larger heavier calibers (my AR10 with 308 ammo gets pretty heavy)... With hand guns 9mm is one of the best trade offs for weight Vs stopping power... Damn 45 cal can get quite heavy when trying to tote around 230grain rounds...:\

1K of rounds is just the beginning. For hand gun, 9 mm is the most popular but it is getting hard to get them lately. I did check the local Academy and Bass Pro over the Thanksgiving weekend and none have any left except the expensive HP ones. Online stores are out or back order too.

If weight is a concern, then the .22 hand gun could be a option but some would say the bullets would be too small.

Due to expense, I am considering filling and pressing my own ammo.

I've almost bought reloading equipment about 4 different times. If my range allowed me to shoot it there, I would have already done it.

Do you live in a place where you can just go outside and shoot? That is my dream and WILL happen when I move to the desert in AZ

Why would anyone stockpile FMJ? Unless you expect the apocalypse to consist of zombies made of paper or steel.

Yes I do. There are several ranges here that dont care if you reload either. A friend of mine packs his .45 ammo with a "hot load" amount of propellant. His shots were rattling the windows in the offices of the range enough for the staff to come by and ask what the hell he was shooting. They let him continue but those hot loads kick like a mule compared to regular 45 ammo.

I live in the city. Its not even legal to shoot a charging coyote in the city.

I also live where it's illegal to discharge a firearm. I'm not talking about shooting in your backyard.

Ask around. I'm sure there are places within a reasonable driving distance where you can shoot up some targets and tin cans.

really? Even the fancy new range with the awesome backstop doesn't allow reloads. I guess too many people being dumbasses? I don't know.

Lane #6, please report to the front desk, immediately.

That's what I heard after I had a brain fart and started firing full load rounds from my .44 magnum. Oops. Yes, please, I'd like a box of target loads.

.22

You can buy five .22 for every one 9mm round, if you have to put 2-3 in each zombie brain you're still coming out way ahead of a 9mm user. Plus, .22 ammo is very light, and with its negligible recoil you will be much more accurate at a given rate of fire. A drawback would be needing to clean your weapons more often, with all the rounds you will be putting through them.

There are over half dozen locations within a hour drive of you
Use your phone and call them all.

Reloads can be dangerous, if one does not know what they are doing, careless or become aggressive.

Safety is paramount

And 5 minutes away is open fields/woods.:\

Yankee Springs is close. We used to go there all the time to plink but then mountain bikers took over. The last time I was there I was plinking around and all of the sudden some guy on a bike rides in front of me about 50 yards out. WTF?

There are some conservation clubs that I have been meaning to check out but you can really only go there during the summer or fall.

LOL... Took my 50 bmg out to shoot and people tend to just stay away...:awe:

That's what I didn't get about the mountain biker.

We were blasting off a ton of ammo. Mostly 12 gauge, so it was LOUD. Yet this guy felt the need to ride up and check it out? He wasn't riding on a trail, we were on the trail. He was just riding through the woods and though he would check out all the shooting he heard going on. No orange, no lights, just spandex.

I will not risk an accident so I never went back.

Funny thing is that this same place will allow hot loads but not allow shotgun. No rifle though. Something about the extra lead from the shot messing with the ventilation equipment.
