What to name network components. I was thinkin planets but seems soo common.

You will run out of planets, unless you open it up to any celestial bodies. I use Greek and Roman gods, Greek for internal use only, such as a local file server, and Roman names for external uses, such as our web servers and email.

That said, if you must do this type of thing, I'm all for naming servers after politicians. That way, when I don't like what they're doing I can just turn off their power.
You keep that in your head. The name of the machine is only useful to ID the physical box.
Ha, right...works fine with a few servers, but when you have a few thousand it gets a bit sticky...

That is when the whole concept of RDBMS comes into play :) hell even access can do it...

for awhile i was naming them different items on a mexican restaurant menu i had in my house...

etc...


although i use a script to rename boxes to their MAC addresses, i really like that

LT - Laptop, (omit for server or desktop)
B - Floor (desktops only) (B = Basement, A = Annex, 1, 2, 3)
FAP - Purpose or (FAP = File & Print, DC = Domain Controller, EXC = Exchange, SMS = Systems Management Server) or Unit (IT = Information Tech, MNT = Maintenance, DES = Design, HR = Human Resources, FIS = Fiscal)
01XP - Machine Number + Workstation OS - (NT, 2K, XP, VS)
2K301 - Server OS + Machine Number - (NT, 2K, XP, 2K3)

I like the logical naming schemes listed in this thread. Being able to tell all kinds of info about the component based on its name = smart.
