For a while, we were naming servers after fast food... BigMac, McNugget, ect...

Now we have several different sets of servers that are used for different purposes... We have the spice rack (salt, pepper, so on) and the fish tank, as well as a few others...

At home, they're all fine, but at work...I wish they could just pick a friggin standard and stick with it...how am I supposed to know <<useless funny name here>> is a Solaris host in Phoenix at first glance???

When I was in the Air Force we had servers named after Austin Powers characters. It was pretty damn annoying.

logic for the win! Being able to look at the name of a server/device and instantly being able to determine a good bit of information about it's function is priceless.

Countries or cities?

The nice ones can be Cancun, Jamaica, Barbados, Galapagos (sp?), etc.

The crappy ones can be named after 3rd world counties. It would be funny to have an email server named "Nigeria"!

I name all of my computers some version of the name Thor - my main PC is Thor, my HTPC is an Acer, so it's Acerthor, and my laptop is Mobile-Thor. All of my hard drives are named after characters on Family Guy - Chris, Stewie, Peter, Lois, Quagmire, Cleveland.

That said, if you must do this type of thing, I'm all for naming servers after politicians. That way, when I don't like what they're doing I can just turn off their power.

You keep that in your head. The name of the machine is only useful to ID the physical box.

I had a machine named "Blanka", but the power supply got fried.
"Zangief" was slow, but was OK if you really knew how to use it.

Something like this plus one of the other suggestions, so you have a common name to refer to, plus info. Make the info pertinent to you of course.

Did you have a Dalshim that was stretched to the limit on resources, or a Chun Li the made an odd spinning noise?

Ha, right...works fine with a few servers, but when you have a few thousand it gets a bit sticky...

We did something like this at my old job.

S - Device type - S for server, d for desktop, R for router, etc.
K - OS - N for NT4, K for Win2k, etc
A - Server function - Q for SQL, A for App, D for Data, Z for Backup, P for PDC, B for DC, etc.
D
M - two letter abbreviate for domain name
S
I - two letter abbreviate for site location
1 - floor or wing within the site
0
0 - two character abbreviate for the server number within the domain, incremented as new servers are added. More of a way to uniquely identify similar servers from each other. Base36 may be necessary in larger organizations.

So for example, by looking at server name skbnany110, with no other information than the server name I can tell you that's a Windows 2000 server that is a BDC (non-PDC emulator role) for the North America domain sitting in the New York office in the first floor server room and it's unique identifier is 10 (useful when say there's two BDC's in the same room).

At work they are named relative to their function - i.e. the servers that are our anti-spam servers are JUNKMAIL1 and JUNKMAIL2. At home, they are named after Vivid girls. :)

ive gotten the "its annoying" from some of the project managers here too, so i made sure there was a good description of each puter name so they didnt get lost. my DC is named Fred, everyone knows Fred.
