What to do about mean feral cat?

Leros

Lifer
A rather mean feral cat has showed up in my neighborhood. The thing has terrorized my cat making her not want to go outside anymore. It's also attacked me a few times.

Animal control won't do anything about it. They told me to go to the animal shelter and pick up a trap. I did that but I caught pet cats both times I set it out. I figure I should stop with the trap since I'm catching the neighbors' pets.

Any suggestions?

Go around to neighbors and explain the situation. See if you can't get everyone in the immediate area to keep their pet cats indoors for as much as possible when you think it would be the best time to trap the feral cat. Then, trap the feral cat.

Get a dog. 😉

That or make sure all the neighbor cats are fixed if they are female and the stray is a male.

do this if the neighbourhood isn't too big. Otherwise there probably are too many cats.

I have had to use the superpoint on a cat before. Whatever you do, go for a headshot. I personally would try subsonic .22:

Same problem, but primer driven and even quieter than pellet guns. A .17HMR or .30-30 might be more ideal but if you have neighbors within a mile...

edit- after thinking about it, probably the best way to address the feral feline is with a compound bow and arrow...

Animal control won't pick up a stray? Call your county admin and file a complaint against them?

As for the cat, contact some rescues in your area and see what they say. They are usually pretty good at trapping advice, and may be able to help you.

Keep your cat inside.

Some cats are indoor cats, some are not. Those that are not, whether by nature or not, need to roam. We had an indoor cat that had been indoor its entire life. It would whine to be let out and wanted to go outside since an early age.

It could never have been an indoor cat. It loves being outside, just like some people love being outside. Finally we relented and it is a much much more satisfied and happy cat now that it can roam and hunt for chipmunks and mice.

Been there and it sucks. had to take my cat to the vet, and then it had the balls to tear down a screen door screen, go in the house and mark all over.
I buried that bastard where he fell.

Trap, neuter, release can work if you can get past "trap". Since the cat is willing to approach you maybe you can walk up to it with the trap and bait, set it up right in front of the cat, and see how dumb it is.
