I'm surprised Darwin hasn't had his way with you yet. Not wearing a helmet while biking is rather stupid...

My two brothers and myself have all made it just fine without helmets, and the fifteen or so kids we grew up riding bikes with are still kicking as well.

Riding in the back of the station wagon on the long, windy, dangerous highway to the coast, riding a 3 wheeler (predecessor to the current 4-wheeled ATVs) with no helmet or supervision at the age of 6. Stuff like that.

This, although I did play plenty of dodgeball which is apparently on the same level as Roman gladiatorial bouts now.

I also played some variation of tag almost every day in elementary school, and I won't allow my kid to attend a school that outlaws it.

Maybe, but a helmet saved my ass a couple of times as a kid. Probably wouldn't have died, but avoided serious injury (concussion, neck, etc)

Lets see...ride bike down crazy big hills at unsafe speeds, climb huge trees, sledding through woods and taking jumps into the road, finding things to make explode with firecrackers, filling things with gun powder to make small explosives, homemade napalm, down the road rockets (lighting a spray can on fire and shooting the bottom with a bb gun), messing with all kinds of bees nests, shooting everything with my bb gun/potato gun/sling shot...

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. :D

My children will probably not do most of this as we most likely will not live in an area that will tolerate it but he will not be sheltered, that's for sure!

I guess rollerblade without a helmet or wrist protection. Lot of blood from not doing the latter. Playing with knives.

Lots of explosives and illegal fireworks. Snow ball fights where you would stick a firecraker in the snowball beforehand and use it like a grenade. My giant potato cannon that has more kick then any gun I have ever shot (including Mosin Nagant without recoil pad or muzzle brake). Dodgeball probably. Tackle dodgeball definitely.

Holy crap, as I think back about it I'm surprised I'm still here. Hmm... and there could be a reason why one of my sons was born w/ some disabilities too :) j/k But seein' as I've only got one son that could pass on the family name I'm betting my wife won't let him:
- Fly down dirt back roads in the back of a pick up truck
- wtf was a seat belt back then?
- See how many kids could swing on a tire swing, hung way out over a river valley, until the rope broke (changing that rope was a bitch, but we'd do it over and over)
- Soak anything we could get our hands on in torch fluid and light it (Nerf soccer/basket/footbals, cat tails, tennis balls, our shoes etc). The torch fluid was cool cuz you could literally play catch w/ the flaming balls and not get burned that badly.
- Jump from the roof of the house into neighbor's pool
- Ride bikes off roof of house into said pool
- Be out in the woods all day doing god knows what
- Be hog tied and left hanging in trees by older siblings literally for hours
- 3/4 wheelers
- Skitchin'
- Roll car sized snow balls and block roads w/ them around town
- Build a slide for life / zip line out of anything we could find
- Tube down the river all day long
- Lawn darts / bb guns / pellet guns / tennis ball -potato canons
- Have shingle fights
- Play smear the queer
- Catch bats at night
- Play blind basketball
- The list goes on and on.
Oh, the memories....

Played with fire. One day some lady was driving by and saw us beside the house, got out of her car and put out the fire. We realized how serious it could've gotten at that point... brushes and all...

Playing king of the mountain on a real mountain top. It was only about a 4 foot drop on the sides. Still hurt like hell.
Swimming in the river at age 9 without any adults. River was right across the street and about 1000ft through the woods.
Shooting each other with BB guns.
Pulling moles out of the ground, really mean critters.
Setting the woods on fire with firecrackers. We lit some of the ones, jumping jacks, and then went home, thought all was okay. Then walked outside about 30 minutes later to see the woods on fire. Mom called fire department. We never told we did it. We would have been skinned alive.
Moved to Tampa, FLA at one point. Rode my bike all over town at age 12. Went to movies by myself, beaches.

This was during the late 70's and early 80's so there was no internet. Hell there wasn't even much to watch on tv, we had I think 4 channels. Spent most of the time outside.

I remember during summer vacation at age 10, I would always leave in the morning with friends and come back at night after a day of tackle football, kill the man with the ball, hide and seek, or simply just hanging out. That was the norm in the city I lived in. No way I let my 11 year old do that. That world doesn't exist anymore.

My brother, sister, and some friends swam/played in water after floods and messed around with debris after hurricanes hit. I recall a rather nasty, long, rusty nail going through my sister's friend's foot after hurricane Andrew hit. I mean completely through, and it was anchored by a piece of wood. You know those really fucking big nails they use on roofs? Yeah, one of those.

You can imagine the wait time for that.

heyyyyy i remember andrew! we had the BIGGEST flood everrrr here, the ditches were full to the max and we had row boats and shit in them. i remember a friend and i were tugging one of them along with two other ppl inside and i tripped and the boat went right over my head. i was short to begin with but that was some freaky shit! lol

oh and one thing my brother and i used to do was play on construction sites where they were building new houses. sometimes when no one was there but often times when the workers were building we were playing king of the hill on the GIANT dirt/clay mounds on the sites. we usually asked if we could and the guys usually said sure. hehe

Maybe really roll the dice, skip the childhood immunizations - let them fight off measles on their own. If they get sick - no antibiotics, beef up that immune system! Hungry? Get out there and hunt yourself some dinner - the world is a cruel place.

I mean, I'm all for letting kids run free and I hate parents that pad their home and scrub everything with purel as much as anyone, but wearing a helmet is like wearing a seatbelt, its just common sense. I got mauled by a pickup truck who ran a stop sign and whipped around a corner when I was about 12. Luckily, I had a helmet on because my head cracked the guy's windshield.

I guess if you're riding trails or off the roads no helmet is fine, but that hardly seems a huge issue on the "pussification" list. Fireworks/Knives/Guns/etc, are all in play though. Childhood would have been crappy without those.

My kids didn't get to ride in the back end of a station wagon (or SUV) with no seatbelts. Otherwise, they've lived more dangerous lives than I did. They each have a dirtbike that I would be afraid to ride.

I never wore a bike helmet.
I walked to school alone until the third grade - then I rode the bus.
Jumped off my roof into snowbanks (but really that'll only be because I live in Maui now)

Ooo

**I played with metal Tonka trucks that had sharp rusty edges**

I lived the first 10 years of my life without a social security number...

I used a public road as my personal sledding hill...
