What is so odd is that he wasn't doing anything to the ipod and just all of the sudden it quits working? Seems like it wouldn't be a hardware error.

When you did the restore was the ipod in hold mode? (I imagine you must have to have it in hold or else it wont get recognized by the computer?)
Those things die all the time for apparently no reason, I can't count how many of them I've shipped to Apple over the summer.

and what exactly do you do that has you shipping so many ipods back to apple?

and if it's 2 weeks old, go return it for a new one.

Best Buy. Must've got at least one every day. And I know many of them were not very old because we'd have customers complaining that they wanted a new one (six weeks old, return policy is only one month, something like that).

so you work where you'd most likely see returns. I bet you see an HP everyday get returned too. Regardless, I doublt they died for "no apparent reason." I have no faith in the way people handle electronics, shove them in any corner, in their backpack w/ their books, dropping them onto concrete and expecting it to work flawlessly... etc, etc.

Yes, that is true. Most people do not handle their things like you or I would. But I did see way more of them get shipped for service than any other common product. Then again, they're probably the most popular.
