it's the ipod photo... when it was playing a song it just died out in the middle of the song and the screen slowly faded away and wouldn't turn back on. i plugged it into my PC via USB and it wouldn't do anything. i put the hold switch to 'hold' and then it boots up even when i remove the USB. as soon as i take it off hold the screen fades away again.

That is true... although I am the only one who offered advice rather than criticized!

so you can't get it to reset when you have it off of hold mode?

I would just plug it in and use the ipod software to reset it to factory condition (if possible and you have your music backed up elsewhere)

yeah whenever i take it off hold it just dies. i just did the ipod software reset and restored it, and it works, and comes up with language selection but of course none of the buttons work. when i go to take it off hold then it dies again.

That's messed up. I hope it's under warranty because I would recommend RMA.

sounds like one of the internal components is shot or the battery is shot

as mentioned before, RMA it if possible. If RMA is not possible may I make the suggestion that you don't buy another Ipod.

What is so odd is that he wasn't doing anything to the ipod and just all of the sudden it quits working? Seems like it wouldn't be a hardware error.

When you did the restore was the ipod in hold mode? (I imagine you must have to have it in hold or else it wont get recognized by the computer?)

Those things die all the time for apparently no reason, I can't count how many of them I've shipped to Apple over the summer.

yes it has to be in hold for anything to work, and everything does work. i'm thinking it is a hardware problem like something's shorting out inside.

Sounds like an issue you don't want to have fixed exactly. A better thing would be a full exchange for a new working unit.
