What the hell happened to good ol' ice cream flavours?

Any of you West Coasters had Salt and Straw? We've had it in-shop the last couple times we were in Seattle. They also ship through Goldbelly, so ended up getting 5 pints for the wife's birthday last year 😀 they've have GREAT conventional flavors, but also get pretty crazy -- my personal favorite was a turkey and stuffing ice cream -- candied turkey skin with cornbread stuffing and peach preserves. Was RIDICULOUSLY good.

If you like to make your own cream, highly recommend using their base recipe. Super cream, and uses Xanthan Gum rather than eggs -- super easy to pull together and no tempering required.

I found a way to make ice cream with condensed milk and heavy cream. It's so easy I just make it at home when I want ice cream instead of buying it.

One can sweetened condensed milk
2 tsp vanilla
Pinch of salt
2 cu heavy cream

Whip the cream, stir in the other ingredients, and pour it in a aluminum cake pan. Freeze for two hours or so, and you have sooper smooov ice cream. Add chocolate, cookies, candy, fruit...whatever you want during mixing if you want different flavors.

I'm a one pint per sitting guy. I can't remember the last time I opened a pint of Ben and jerry's and not finished it though

That's my problem with Talenti sherbet. I settle down with a pint and next thing I know I'm nearing bottom. Ice cream is just not filling. Rarely buy though.

3 cups heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup fresh lemon zest

Custard base:
Heat cream, milk, sugar in a heavy sauce pan. Stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture is hot but don't bring to boil. Whisk egg yolks and pour into cream mixture. Stir in lemon zest. Cook custard, stirring constantly until mixture thickens slightly. Don't allow to boil. Remove the custard from heat. Place a sheet of plastic wrap over custard, pressing the wrap onto the top of the custard and place in fridge. The plastic wrap reduces skin formation on the top of the custard. Chill until custard is at fridge temperature (don't freeze).

Once cooled, remove plastic wrap and any surface skin from custard. Stir lemon juice and zest into custard. Pour custard into ice cream maker and churn/freeze per ice cream maker instructions.

I have eaten no flavor ice cream other than Trader Joe's French Vanilla for a few years now. I rather like it.

I think only once in my life have I ever eaten lemon ice cream. and it was fantastic. 7-11 right now has lemon meringue, but its got all kinds of other garbage in it. Not the same.
We had a nice ice cream shoppe here in town but the quarantine killed it last year. I wept. They had tons of good, unique flavors.

Proud to see we've kept this thread alive for 8 years.

Sad to see that OP has been MIA since ~3 months after posting this thread. I hope our collective berating didn't scare him off lol.

No thats not why he left.
I know why he left and it has nothing to do with the forum members. Theres other reasons but we cannot discuss it openly in the forums.

I swear I must be pretty close to the only person left on earth that prefers NOT putting anything crunchy in/on my ice-cream. (frozen fruit like strawberries/banana's I'm okay with)

I like my ice-CREAM to be smooth and CREAMY ... however I ALSO like flavors other than vanilla, chocolate and coffee as well and those are the only ones commonly available near me.

Turkey Hill had a lemon meringue for awhile that I remember enjoying. I don't remember if it was real ice cream dairy dessert though. I imagine straight lemon ice cream would be delicious.
