Kind of hard to compare a continent to a city. That said Africa is very diverse. It has a lot of developed city, and culture, while other areas are extremely poor, full or disease and crime. Detroit on the other hand is just a shithole in it's entirety.

This whole thread is stupid for the reason you mentioned... comparing a city to a continent? There are some nice places in Africa.

But your own statement (in bold) is just as ignorant. Ever been to Downtown Detroit? There are recently built stadiums (Tigers and Lions), Greektown, Ren. Center, etc... it's certainly not a "shithole". I do agree that the rest of Detroit is a shithole.

Yeah you're right, I don't know everything about Detroit. But from everything I have read, seen, and heard (including from Detroit residents) it makes me believe I would never want to visit there. The same cannot be said about certain parts of Africa.
 
I promise to contribute to this relatively soon. But I also didn't pick the nicest part of Africa to visit... so does that make it a good comparison or bad comparison for Detroit?
 
Has the OP ever been to Detroit? I've never been to Africa so I can't make a good call but I do realize there are a lot of Black people in both places you listed so perhaps you might just want to avoid them at all costs. Stay in HI.

IF this thread is inspired by the earlier Somalia teaching trip thread, and you're comparing it to that in a danger point-of-view, then the answer is Detroit, of course.



But SA is a continent and has many interesting parts that makes Detroit an unfair comparison.

What an idiotic question. Africa is an entire continent consisting of various cultures, peoples, tendencies, and histories. To lump them all into one monolithic group is just dumb.

I've traveled to several countries in Africa like Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia. South Africa is obviously highly westernized so it is similar to any major western country. Tanzania is one of the most beautiful countries as it is home to the Serengeti and of course the Masai Mara; one of the last natural preserves in the world.

Many people in Africa are generally hospitable, friendly, and nice. Westernized blacks are quite different in my experience.

Also, if you are really comparing "Africa" to a dump like Detroit, there is no doubt which one is 'better'. However, if you're talking about living standards, amenities, and culture, Detroit is considered more 'developed'. LOL!
