Africa has some positive qualities... But it also has warlords, pirates, famine, widespread AIDS, random deadly diseases and other things that western society has chosen to ignore.

Detroit has much of the same. Does being in North America give it an advantage?

Never been to either. Africa obviously sucks worse if we are to take this as a serious question. However Africa is also far more interesting, I'm sure Detroit is boring as fuck no offence to anyone who lives there. If I were going to go on a vacation and could be assured that both would be relatively safe I'd pick Africa in a heart beat over Detroit. So I vote Detroit.

Depends what parts of Africa.

Is Detroit representative for the entire US, let alone for America (no, that's a continent, not a country)? Is Texas? Is Cuba a better representative for America?

If you look at cities the differences are even bigger. There's enough good places where you won't see much the kind of issues you have in Detroit.
But if you look at the 'bad' places in Africa then 'Africa' is much much worse. Wars are never pretty after all, and there's several countries with (civil) wars, including all the attrocities of torture, organised mass rape, and other crimes against humanity.

I'd love to take a holiday in Africa, but I sure as hell would never visit Detroit intentionally.

I would tend to agree, all the cool wildlife in Africa makes up for whatever shitty problems go on there. I'd much rather see a wildebeest get devoured by a lion than see the Detroit Lions attempt to play football.

This. Some cities in Africa are really nice and developed.

Come to Detroit for the learning experience. A close up first hand look at the results of 49 years of Democrat governance.

We have the hunters and the hunted. You can stroll the streets for the mind jarring feeling of heightened awareness. Listen for the gun shots. See the poverty and the misery. Drive the freeway looking warily up at the overpasses for objects being tossed into traffic. See where your tax dollars are going and where they will continue to go.

There's a lot of terrible things that happen in Africa what with all the warlords, drug wars, etc that are there. However there's other "friendlier" places in Africa. Detroit is 100% shithole. People that claim otherwise are talking about some suburb close to, but not really Detroit.

And I hope the Sharks destroy the Wings.

Comparing a country to a city; aren't you a bright one?

What is it that makes you feel a country is easier or just as easy to operate and function than a city?

Africa. You could walk out of a Detroit a lot more easily than you could walk out of Africa.

Thanks for further building my argument; a continent with various countries in it being compared to ONE US city.

What is it exactly that most of you fear about Africa? It sounds like you are there every day or something. Is life that hard there?

Why don't you move?

So your strategy was to id Africa as a country and call the other person an idiot because it makes a better argument? What?
