What sort of Gamer are you?

  • I buy all the latest hardware and buy all the current games on Steam for full price

  • I buy budget hardware today to play yesterday's most demanding titles (steam sales are my friend)

  • I like old games the most, but want to use High end Eyefinity cards for triple monitors

Option #1 would be someone who likes Core i7, Crossfire/SLI for games like Mass Effect 2, modern warefare 2, Dragon Age Origins.

Option #2 would be someone who buys Core i3/AMD to play Fallout 3 GOTY, Shadow of Chernobyl, Bioshock (or any other game on blow-out sale at Steam)

Option #3 (which I doubt very few people fall into) would be someone who has an older mainboard, but wants to play older games with the full immersion effect of Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround vision (which hasn't been released yet)

I play FPS ,Racing,action games.

I buy hardware to play newer games in my catagory with min 30 fps @ high detail @ my resolution.

Bargain bin gamer here, since I don't like online multiplayer or devoting much time to a single title it works great for me, saves me a bunch of money on both software and hardware.
 
Not really my option there, but I buy mid-level hardware and play mostly old games. I rarely buy a new game (unless I hear it is really good and worth the money + it is in on of my favorite genre.)

Sometimes, I'll buy an older game from steam that I haven't heard anything about (like overlord 1+expansion+2 for $10, that was a good buy), but that is usually pretty rare.
 
So many choices missing. First and second choices are to restrictive. You need about 9 choices to encompass the above gaming survey.

I buy very capable hardware, play many modern titles (i.e. pay full price), but still play older games as well.
 
I can't afford the latest high end hardware. I always bought mid-range or budget. Still do. Used to be big into PC gaming, moved to consoles, gotten back into PC a bit with Steam's sales. Quite a few really good games on there that are at impulse buy prices.

Yep, I realized after I posted the poll that I didn't include enough options.

Too bad there doesn't appear to be a way to correct this (I have checked the edit menu)
 
Where's "I don't use Steam because it's a piece of shit and I like my rights, but I buy reasonable hardware so that I can play most games with reasonable settings for a couple of years or so"?
 
My intentions cover all 3 options, I buy new and old games on my old hardware that I just got an Eyefinity setup for (I never played Bioshock or Mass Effect until I got Eyefinity.. too bad ME doesn't work right on it.)
 
#2. I don't play too many games, but when I do it's usually stuff that's been out for a long time. I have a video card that is a couple years old so I doubt it would play any of the games that have come out in past few years. It was not high end at the time I bought it, think I paid under 100 for it lol.
 
Number 2-ish. Have an i5, but still undecided whether I want to get a 5770 or 5850. One lasts longer, but the other gives me savings to upgrade earlier with less pain.
 
I don't feel like any of these apply. I have an e6750 and 4870 but i play counter-strike 1.6 (NOT SOURCE!) competitively.
 
I buy last generation hardware to play whatever game I want to play at the time. I mainly play first person shooters, more into MP than SP. I am looking forward to playing bf bad company 2, but my favorite game to play is COD (MP). Other games I play often include I also play TF2 and BF2142.

I have a c2q 9550 and a 4850.
 
What if you pirate the game first, then buy it on a steam sale? 😵

I picked #2. I'm those kind of people who'll come out saying "The cake is a lie!" a whole year later. Oh wait, I actually pre-ordered the OJ Box.... Well, it applies to all the other games other than OJ Box then.
 
I play all sorts of different games. Many of them are strictly 2d and do not require any sort of 3d acceleration at all. For those that do, I just settle for 'good enough' at the target rez with most bang for buck.
 
I took option 2 though 'budget hardware' can seem a rather elastic (and humbling) term. I thought 'mainstream enthusiast' was supposed to apply to my cost bracket, heh.

That said, I'm not the guy who bought a Radeon HD 4870 when they were initially released, nor am I buying a Radeon HD 5800 now. I like the idea of paying between $100-200 for a video card, and the closer to $100 the better (various sweet spot cards in this bracket have included the GeForce 8800 GT, the Radeon HD 4850, and now probably the 4860/4890 or 5770).

I do like buying games later. With a few rare exceptions I rarely feel modern games are worth much over $10-15 to me, and it's no great thing for me to wait a year or two. I finally got Bioshock for $10 this past Black Friday and Prince of Persia this week for $6.17, heh.

On the other hand I may buy Final Fantasy XIII in March. Or whatever Fumito Ueda (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus) finally makes for the PS3...

Edited: mmm, I guess owning at least a Radeon HD 4870 / 5770 is a good idea for ME2 if you're going to switch on the MSAA at 1920x1200.

i wouldnt say i play games as old as bioshock. i buy games a few months after release when they go on sale. First and foremost i HATE playing buggy games, so by then the patches have been released and i'm playing a stable game. When they go on sale usually 25% off is enough for me.🙂 Bought fallout3 @ 50% off sale, and Empire TW at the 50% sale. Now im just waiting for dragon age origins and ME2 to go on sale.🙂
