What sort of Gamer are you?

  • I buy all the latest hardware and buy all the current games on Steam for full price

  • I buy budget hardware today to play yesterday's most demanding titles (steam sales are my friend)

  • I like old games the most, but want to use High end Eyefinity cards for triple monitors

A better way of doing this might be to ask two questions, then display the answers visually.

1) On average, how long after release do you usually buy the titles that you are very interested in? (0mo, 3mo, 6mo, 12mo, etc)

2) From 1-5, what level of gaming computer do you normally have? (1-Minimal, 2-Budget, 3-Bang for Buck/Low-End, 4-Bang for Buck/High-End, 5-Extreme)

Take all your responses, and plot them on a graph with time on the x-axis and gaming power on the y-axis. The upper left quadrant represents Expensive Gamer (high willingness to pay for good games and good hardware). Upper right quadrant represents Hardware Junky (high willingness to pay for good hardware and low willingness to pay for good games). Lower left represents low hardware and high willingness to pay for good games (Medium Gamer), and lower right represents low hardware and low willingness to pay for good games (Cheap Gamer/Not a Gamer).

I use a mid-priced build and I like Tactical or RPG games (Homeworld series, Spellforce series, Dungeon Seige series and so on) The last FPS I played was Borderlands and I cant even thing which FPS before that since it was so long ago.
I even keep Pharoah installed for the quick fun.
Been wanting to get DosBox installed and find those old games I didint have power to run in the past, Not to mention Mechworrior 1-3 again.

A mix of 1 and 2. I play the latest games and older titles, but as you can see by the rig in my sig, I don't have the latest and greatest.

I buy mid range hardware (bang for the buck). Play a lot of newer and older games. I'm not a stat whore (max settings/high FPS). I'd rather save money and turn down the settings.

I bought a 5870 yesterday and usually don't buy top of the line hardware but this generation's top of the line hardware is so cheap compared to what it used to be. I remember having to pay $300 for the low end of the high end generation and got my 5870 for $368. Also the games you list in the OP for top of the line hardware don't even require good hardware to run it. Dawn of War 2, Crysis, and STALKER: CS are the types of games that need good hardware, not Mass Effet 2, Dragon Age, or CoD MW2.

None of the above.

Other than GPU (which i upgrade less than CPU), i'm always above needed specs for newer game requirements.

I tend to upgrade GPU when pricing is good &/or there's a specific game i want higher settings for.

I play pretty much only MP FPS games, a mix of old & new.

If i really want a game, i buy it almost immediately, regardless of price.
If i don't really want it, i wait for it to be cheap.

I don't upgrade unless I'm confident the net cost to do so after selling my existing hardware will be minimal.

I've been running my Phenom II 920 and 4870 for quite a while now. No need to upgrade in the near future.
