What some of the things you will NEVER spend a premium on?

This feels like an ignorance trolling thread. Like Markbnj with his 'never use premium gas' comment. He's obviously not that stupid and just trying to get a guffaw out of us.

He might, in fact, never use premium gasoline. If I haven't been led awry, an engine requiring a higher octane gasoline can be tuned out; or, if you have a beater, you might just not care. He stated his automobile runs just fine on regular; why should we not believe him?

I prefer high quality shoes. I've noticed zero difference in socks.

For dress shoes, this is especially true. I prefer Johnston & Murphy because the heals are often padded and stitched well. They hold up to a lot of walking...but I've recently gone through some treads a little too quick on them...still worth the $120-150/pair price tag.

As for socks, I can tell cheap ones when they wear too quickly. They get thin spots, etc...price doesn't always determine quality, but if I found a quality brand that was breathable and durable, I would expect to pay more.

I like Goldtoe and Silvertoe socks and prefer to buy any made in the US over foreign socks... (difficult to find these days)

Running/Walking shoes.

Nike, Adidas = over priced hype.

$34.95 for a pair of New Balance or Avia white running/walking shoes works and aren't overpriced.

Premium is different than generic gas. Using regular only decreases performance with no harm to the car.

Using the cheapest possible gasoline is different because they don't properly process the gasoline so it leaves tons of gunk in your fuel system. Gasoline is a very highly volatile and unclean product, so buying brand name properly detergented gasoline is actually important in keeping your car running a long time.

I do not think you understand how octane works, my friend, or ECMs for that matter.

My Toyota's engine will run on whatever I give it. Regular, premium, sriracha.

Nice sports car and 26k does not compute. Can't be that nice and can't be that sport.

The one thing I won't pay a premium on, ever, is socks. Socks are socks.

Then you probably wouldn't like my $15 a pair Injinji 2.0 Run socks. A shame they're aaaaaaaaaamazing. I ordered $100 worth and got free shipping too! After discovering Injinji toe socks I don't think I could ever go back to even regular end premium socks like Nike DriFit.

Phones - every phone I will ever buy will be an Android based phone or Samsung.
Best to stick with low-end software and brands.

I sense much confusion about gas in here.

Premium gasoline is not needed sure but your engine was designed for premium. You lose out on higher mpg by putting regular in it and the engine has to compensate its timing to make sure that it doesn't cause knocking while using lower grade.

I have never done the math since I never cared enough about this but I suspect that the price of cheaper gasoline is negated by lower miles almost at the exact dollar ratio.

The problem arises when you are really pushing your engine or your sensors (O2, MAF?... I'm not too inclined here) go bad. Your engine could default to the timings that it was designed for and you'll have engine damaging knocks. Toyota? Who knows.. maybe that japanese engineering can overcome this but you're really just being cheap for no reason here since you're losing mpg. (I know this begging the question... deal with it)

As for name brand gas. All gas comes from the same place... I don't think the detergents do much of anything for your car but I'd happily eat these words if someone is able to actually prove how volatile no name gas is.

Sadly I agree with this one. I can't spend more than $200 on a phone since I see them as disposable. That doesn't mean I haven't had my fair share of good phones.. just gotta shop for non samsung android phones.

if your super premium sports car wants 91 and you're feeding 87...you probably shouldn't have a super premium sports car.

If you drive a Prius that wants 87 and you put in 91, what a waste of money.

Sometimes, cheaper is better quality than more expensive.

I get the no collar cotton Tees from Old Navy, which are usually on sale there. That is cheaper than Target etc, and definitely much better quality as well.

No premium gasoline unless my vehicle requires it.

No premium of any electronic...ie. Apple products. Don't get me wrong, they are nice but not worth the extra money plus they will be obsolete so fast.

No premium on clothes.. "boutique" brand that you would pay an arm and leg for.
