What size engagement ring did you get your gf?

I bought from a local jeweler here in pittsburgh, but it was a .53 Marquise cut. Very nice quality. All said and done was around $2100.

I didn't go by size really, but what looked the best on the setting. It really depends on what cut you want and what the setting looks like. A .5 round or princess would look tiny, but a Marquise looks very big after you put it in it's setting.

You need to get what you can afford. How much are you planning on spending? Also decide if you want a really good small diamond or a large crappy one. A good quality small diamond can be more expensive than a large flawed stone.

No Women will be satisfied with anything below 1 carat. All women compare their ring with friends... Best thing is to shop around and compare rings..

^ is correct (except the "all" part - there are exceptions). You should go with the 1.0ct+ mark if your financials don't mind it. Make her happy, no matter what your love for each other means... allowing her to "show off" to her friends is always a bonus. You'd love to show off your G35c or 350z rather than an Accord, wouldn't you ?

I got her a 1.06ct... sufficient to satisfy all parties... because I wanted as much for her, though I still needed to save for a house (not to mention the wedding)...

Anyway, you can also get sidestones that make it add up to 1.0ct... the center stone can stay below 1.0ct... you'd save [some] money that way.

Oops accidentally voted wrong mine was 3/4, even though I really didnt have the money and she knew that it still wasnt big enough. She didnt make a big deal about it, but you could tell she was a little dissapointed.

just a word of advice, one large stone is better than a few small stones.

one of my female friends got engaged a few months ago... her b/f got her a gold ring with all these tiny diamonds on it. we all had to lie to her face to tell her how pretty it was, then scoffed about it behind her back.

Get a man made diamond. You get a bigger rock that looks better and is cheaper. Everybody wins.

I think around a karat total at most, but it is a large one with two smaller ones on the side. One benefit of multiple smallers is that you can get a lesser quality and it won't show as much.

Girls will compare, but only stupid girls will actually make anything out of it.

I always advise to get what one can afford. If you have zero cash get a tiny loan. If you have enough money for an OK ring, then don't get a loan at all. Loans for engagement rings are incredibly stupid and unecessary. Get her a bigger ring when you've both got more money, if she wants one.

never get anything you can't affort.

also, my take on this is that if you start off small, and your love grows, you can always upgrade...say 1st anniversary...2nd...or 5th. If you start with 1ct....what else can you upgrade to? LOL

if you must have 1ct...I'd suggest .9ct...it's pretty much the same thing and the cost difference is HUGE!

If you have zero cash, just wait a few months. Way to start a marriage - in debt from the engagement ring.

My center stone is .61. The total weight is around 1.4.
Pics.

This guy has the right idea.
There was that article in Wired about the guy who figured out how to make man-made diamonds at a cost effective level. I hope the De Beers Cartel didnt hire someone snuff him b/c this whole diamond BS is outta control.
Who woulda thought that the De Beers marketing gimmicks woulda taken root so firmly in this recent generation of women?
My mom said that things are crazy now and diamonds were never this expensive back in the 70s and 80s.
Fortunately, she had bought lotsa stones back then for like 1/10th of the today's price which allowed me and my brothers to dodge this insanity.

My condolences to the OP for the loss he's going to sustain.

Harder than selling a small stone to a girlfriend is selling a fake/man-made/synethetic one. I agree that diamonds are blown out of proportion, but have fun trying to tell your gf that "it's just as good", when she knows it's not the "real thing".

thats sad, comments on how shallow that girl is

when and IF i get married i wont be getting my GF a diamond engagement ring, i think diamonds are plain, the look like cut glass, my dad didnt get my mon a diamond engagement ring he got here a black star sapphire, he didnt get he a diamond anything till their 10 year aniversery,

if you GF loves you she should agree to marry you when you present her with a ring you got out of the $0.50 machine at walmart

That would require an extremely atypical woman. When guys arent there, women congregate and compare little crap like this. A woman who doesnt care about the ring would require friends who arent as shallow as the normal population, or enough self confidence to render immunity to the flak she would get.

you misunderstood me. the girlfriend wasn't complaining about the ring, all of her friends were (behind her back). it wasn't so much about the ring itself as it was about the boyfriend's lack of taste.

Amen to that!

My engagement ring is .71 karat diamond solitaire set in a simple gold band. It is NOT true that all girls will only be satisfied with 1 karat or more. That is ridiculous! I for one did not want a huge, gaudy diamond. I am a simple kind of girl, and I know I'm not the only one out there like that.

Anyway, once we decided that marriage was in our future, I gave my (now) husband a good idea of what kind of ring I wanted, and then he went and chose the diamond and the setting separately and according to his budget. I suggest that you do the same with your future fiance, and both of you will be happy in the end. He was still able to completely surprise me when he proposed to me even though I knew it was coming at some point. Good luck!

A guy I know bought his fiance a $14,000 engagement ring (with her prodding, of course). He makes $30,000 annually before taxes. No wonder he doesn't have a car and still rents a 1 bedroom apartment despite them living together for about 6 years and having a child.
