Get a man made diamond. You get a bigger rock that looks better and is cheaper. Everybody wins.
Harder than selling a small stone to a girlfriend is selling a fake/man-made/synethetic one. I agree that diamonds are blown out of proportion, but have fun trying to tell your gf that "it's just as good", when she knows it's not the "real thing".Originally posted by: Sust

This guy has the right idea.
There was that article in Wired about the guy who figured out how to make man-made diamonds at a cost effective level. I hope the De Beers Cartel didnt hire someone snuff him b/c this whole diamond BS is outta control.
Who woulda thought that the De Beers marketing gimmicks woulda taken root so firmly in this recent generation of women?
My mom said that things are crazy now and diamonds were never this expensive back in the 70s and 80s.
Fortunately, she had bought lotsa stones back then for like 1/10th of the today's price which allowed me and my brothers to dodge this insanity.
My condolences to the OP for the loss he's going to sustain.

just a word of advice, one large stone is better than a few small stones.
one of my female friends got engaged a few months ago... her b/f got her a gold ring with all these tiny diamonds on it. we all had to lie to her face to tell her how pretty it was, then scoffed about it behind her back.

I always advise to get what one can afford. If you have zero cash get a tiny loan. If you have enough money for an OK ring, then don't get a loan at all. Loans for engagement rings are incredibly stupid and unecessary. Get her a bigger ring when you've both got more money, if she wants one.
