Nooky, those brightness pops you see in sports are likely from artifacting caused by compression and have nothing to do with your tv. Also, the fluctuating brightness was known about on the 2011 models almost immediately, and only requires replacing the A-board.

My 60" has the annoying "fluctuating brightness" problem that didn't show up until it was well out of warranty, and as far as I know there is no way to fix it without paying through the nose to have a dealer fix it. It's not horrible, but annoying enough (especially watching sports) that it would give me an excuse to buy a new t.v. and relegate it to workout video duty in the basement for her.

If Panasonic wasn't the only plasma game in town I'd consider another brand as the issue has left me mighty annoyed at them.
Have you tried turning off Automatic Brightness Control? Or maybe it's called Automatic Brightness Limiter... Something like that.

Living room has a 42 inch LCD. I used to have a 65 inch 4:3, but I got rid of it when I set up my home theater in the basement (106 inch front Projection.)

Yes, it's called CATS. I have been through everything, all the settings, and yes I have a bad serial number t.v. bought through Amazon, all of the bad boards were not caught immediately, and to have it fixed now is almost impossible. Repeated attempts to contact Panasonic have failed. Unless you know of a supply of replacement boards that someone will send me one and let me do it myself. I couldn't find one, so I am trying to order one through Panasonic.
