What should I do?

Ok. Just sold my Treo 650 on eBay. I had a starting bid price and a But It Now price. The person who won the auction used "Buy It Now" and paid promptly through PayPal.

Only thing is that their address is uncomfirmed with PayPal and on the transaction details page on PayPal it says, "(The sender of this payment is Unverified)". The guy has zero feedback on eBay and joined May 19, 2006.

On my auction I specifically stated that I will only accept payment via verified PayPal account.

So what should I do? Give the guy some time to get his account verified? Give him a refund and relist my auction?

No but this is exactly why I will never trust a ebay seller.

Why? What did I do wrong? It's just that I've been burned by scammers on eBay before. People paying with bogus credit cards through PayPal and such.

Seems like this guy registered on eBay and PayPal yesterday to win my auction and he didn't even read that I will accept payment only via verified PayPal account.

He has got his money but if it turns out to be sourced from a stolen cc or fraudulent account, Paypal will reverse the charge to his account.

My advice: Refund the money to the sender, leave a neutral feedback thanking him for his bid but as stated in the auction you cannot accept from an unverified member.

It sounds shady to me. New members scare me.

I think there is a way to block (0) bidders from bidding without prior auth.

Good luck.

Oh he read it, trust me. People like this constantly open new ebay accounts and pay instantly with stolen cc in hopes of getting some goods shipped to them before they are busted. Think about it, he probably won a bunch of auctions, of which one person will ship to him and leave him a fat positive feedback for quick payment.

Do a search on the username and see how many auctions this guy has won in the last day since he joined.

OK, I get it now. (Boomerang takes off his rose colored glasses)

Yes, I would see if there is a way to block those bids.

Thanks akshatp. That's what I'm gonna do. Just refund his money and give him neutral.

Just afraid of retaliatory neutral or possibly even a negative.

Should I give him a week to get his account to a verified status?

Another reason why I will never trust ebay sellers. Not everyone is a scammer and you have to factor in loses. All ebay sellers should and a lot do.

A lot of ebay sellers only care about their money and not their customers as well. Getting paid is important, I agree, but there needs to be a balance for getting paid and taking care of the customer.

You have just lost a lot of customers.

Leon -

He clearly stated in the ad that no unverified paypal consumers should bid.

The guy who bid is in the wrong. How did he lose customers?

The disclaimer is stated clearly in the auction page.

Where is the disconnect here Leon? Did you not see where the seller said "On my auction I specifically stated that I will only accept payment via verified PayPal account. "

If this was clear from the begininng, and then a customer with a non verified account bid and paid, how is the seller in the wrong??? Please explain.

Googled and Mapquested his address and they seem legit. Nothing particular came up on Google. I guess I'll try calling him tomorrow. I did email him when I first received the payment notification email (when I got home from work) and told him that I'd give him 7 days to get his account PayPal verified or I'd give him a refund.

What do you mean they seemed "legit?" As in the address was real? Why wouldnt it be? He still wants the item... Any valid addres will come up in mapquest.

Yeah that's what I mean. The address shows up in what looks like a residential area. I guess I'll try calling this guy up later on today.

Scam. You will lose your money AND yout Treo.

I would email him, let him know you specifically stated in the auction that only verifed Paypal can be used, he didn't, so you are going to refund his $$$ and relist.

This is SCREAMING fraud, you were smart to require a verified address, now follow through.

I just had the same situation. My buyer wanted to do a conference call with someone from Paypal, who was gonna tell me that his address had been confirmed, despite the fact that their website said otherwise. Hello alarm bells.

I gave the buyer a choice: get his address confirmed before I shipped his item, or a refund. He chose the refund, and neither of us got screwed over.

Never ever ship to an unconfirmed address - Paypal will give the benefit of the doubt to the buyer, and screw your account. Better to err on the side of caution than lose your item and your money.
