BMW xi models.

I don't think that was pre-2000.

think its 2001

BMW made a 325xi from 1988 to 1991.

really? well i was only 4 in 1988...i guess thats why

Heh, sorry, it was called the xi, not the ix. I got confused. Regardless, it was still made before 2000.

EDIT: I was wrong again! It was from 1986 to 1991.

they'd have to be AWD- you know what happens if you drive a 4WD in 4WD on the bitumen=exploded transfer case...

how so?

Usually, 4WD refers to something that is selectable via a transfer case. These are not designed to be driven at high speeds as the tranfer cases (and the gears within them) were not designed to be used at high speeds. AWD usually refers to a permanent 4WD system that is used all the time at any speed. While they are both technically four wheel drive, common usage has drawn a line between the two terms...

But, as George Carlin has said, Fvck common usage!

edit: forgot the "a"

Interesting. I thought BMW only made RWD until extremely recently as part of a "legacy" thing.

repost of a link that explains the phenomonon;

http://www.pps.net.au/4wdencounter/4wdtech/vehicle_features.html

When a part-time 4WD (without a centre differential) is in 4WD an attempts to corner on bitumen, all wheels need to rotate at different speeds, but without a centre differential they cannot. This creates the phenomena called "axle windup" or "transmission windup". High strain is placed on the drive shafts and transmission, eventually causing one of two things to happen. Either one of the wheels slips or spins to overcome the stress or the drive-shaft/transmission breaks. This is why part time 4WD?s should never select 4WD on bitumen.

the 1989 Nissan Skyline GTR R32..AKA "GODZILLA"
various Aussie ford falcons and GMH Kingswoods copped AWD conversions during the 60's and 70's
1986 Ford XF Falcon S prototype fitted with a GTR style AWD and a twin turbo 4.1litre Inline 6 producing about 270kw

Well that was uncalled for, why do you ask that? Just because I don't know what vehicles had 4 wheel drive?

certainly not all subarus in Oz- there were 2WD Liberties in the mid 90s- i know 'cos i've had a ride in one...

subaru, audi quattros, toyota previa/corolla wagon/celica/tercel, Honda Civic Wagon, BMW 325xi, Mercedes Benz 4Matic models, Mazda MPV...

though IIRC, some of those were 4WD

I'm sure there's a few more, but damned if I can think of them. The Civic Wagon had 4WD though. 😉

- M4H

Not many of them were AWD though were they? Most of them were FWD.

Subaru is the only one I can think of that I would actually own. Audi's are horrible for reliability.

as far as audis,

urquattro.. starting 1980
100/200/5000,V8, starting 1986
A4, A6, A8 - complete run
S2/RS2/S4/S6/Setc
passat

etc

One of the soviet "pobeda"s from 1955 had 4x4 too, and i think DKW made on sometime before that, looking similar to VW 'thing'.
here is pic of pobeda from 1955g. http://digilander.libero.it/cuoccimix/G72.jpg

Toyota has quite a few models with AWD or 4WD (Celica, Tercel, Corolla), Audis w/Quattro, Honda even had an AWD Civic (looks like it may have been 4WD).

Stealth R/T and 300GT VR-4 too.

Viper GTS

The Viper GTS was never AWD. Unless I'm mistaken which I don't think I am
