It's an F-14. Yes I'm sure, and you people who are jsut htrowing out random numbers and hoping an F-XX actually exists shouldn't act like you know what you're talknig about.

calm down. at first glance it didn't look like a tomcat to me...

Why not? The only other plane we have in service with similar intakes is the F-15, and it doesn't fly off carriers. The F-18 intakes are underneathe the front of the wing, and the wing flows smoothly into the fusealage, there is no abrupt angle like on the F-14 and F-15.

See, this is why in my first post I just said Tomcat. I knew Tomcat's flew off carriers, but I wasn't sure of their F designation (14 or 15) until I looked it up. ;)

I was always under the assumption that the F14 and F15 were different.

F14 - Northrop Grumman craft
F15 - McDonnell Douglas

The only similarity they share is the Pratt & Whitney engines.

Yes they are completely different aircraft. I'll take an F-15 personally, but that's just me. BTW, Boeing bought out McDonald Douglas. Now whenever I go to airshows they announce the aircraft as the Boeing F-15 Eagle or the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, which just seems wrong.

You can also tell the plane in the picture is an F-14 from the outline of the targeting camera that can be seen under the nose. Also, the other plane is the EA-6B Prowler. The A-6 Intruder is no longer in service. The airframe still exists as the Prowler as well as a refueling aircraft (can't remember it's designation).

They are completely different...the F14 also has a 'swing wing'..which the F15 doesn't...plus a bunch of other differences. :p
