I think it was Wipeout 2097 that had the awesome soundtrack. How can you go wrong with Orbital? :D

As far as original music goes, I'd second C&C/Red Alert - it's funny, the music is great when you're playing, but if you take it out of the game it instantly becomes kind of cheesy. Deus Ex had quite nice, atmospheric music, and a very good theme song. Unreal and Quake music always sounded kind of generic to me.

I'm going to have to go with the Soundblaster music for Commander Keen 4... or Wolfenstein 3D :D

Can't believe they haven't been mentioned yet:

Heroes of Might and Magic II
Civilization II
Warcraft II

and, the king of kings,
Total Annihilation!

MechWarrior II ?

Damn you, beat me to it. I always think of mw2 when best soundtracks in a game comes up

31st Century and Ghost Bear's Legacy had a cool thematic element to it, while the kick ass Mercenaries added Heavy Metal!!!!!

Woot to MW2 and GB Legacy. Damnit, I should have ripped the CDs while I could; now my dad confiscated my games :(. In any case, I never did beat GB Legacy; always died on one of the last levels which you had to jump into the other spaceship while in space.

Damn't I wanted to say that. It really added to the feel of the game. Cataclysm and HW2 are pretty good too.

Doom II, Mechwarrior II, Heroes II -- all good.

I loved some of the themes from Planescape: Torment especially the one for (I think) The Fortress of Regret.

Some songs on the NFS:U soundtrack are actually pretty good. Mmm... StaticX.

I guess it's a bit tough to go with Vice City's soundtrack since it was a PS2 game first.

Hmm ... I think Quake ... however there are lots of games that have great soundtracks. (by great I mean they seem to well with the game, and they are decent to listen to, I don't think I would listen to any games Soundtrack while not playing the games otherwise ...)
