Let me tell ya, the world is made up of the dumbest people...and I work with all of them.

I assist the IT director at my high school, where I graduated from this year. Each year, we replace 1 of 3 labs, and the old computers are given to teachers. We send out emails stating that "hey, you're getting a new computer, back your sh!t up to the network". Each user has their own drive mapped through Novell, no problem. It's a 10 sec clicking job! But what do they do? Save EVERYTHING, syllabi, documents, sh!t like that, on their HDD!?! WTF?!

Why? You have a network drive for a reason! So far, I've had 10 teachers chew me out because I didn't check the boxes for their crap. Why didn't I? They were PII whiteboxes! I'm not gonna waste half an hour checking for the stuff YOU were supposed to backup! I've been yelled at and everything, and now, since my boss is out of town till tomorrow, the principles feel like they have the right to ORDER me to check 100+ HDD's so teachers won't have to waste their time retyping their sh!t. WTF? Not my job. We told them, and they didn't back it up! It's a blessing from God that I brought my HDD enclosure, or else I would have quit right there. This is the biggest load of sh!t...

CLIFFS:
1. Teachers know they're getting a new computer, we (IT dir and myself) tell them to backup to the network)
2. They don't backup, get all pissy with me
3. Boss is out of town, priciples sieze opportunity to ORDER me to go through 100+ HDDs looking for sh!t
4. I'm downright fuming pissed

Did you provide instructions on how to do it? If so then say they had the notes but didn't do their homework so they failed the test.

network drives tend to be slow.

We have a novell network here at my work and anytime someone complains about something loading slow, because it is saved over the network, when we had downtime we tested it to see if having it on the hard drive was faster and yes it was, by far.

granted, they are loading 200mb+ of powerpoints sometimes....yet our network is only 10mbps :(.

we are upgrading to a gignetwork in a few weeks, thankfully, and load times should be mmuch faster...and we are removing novell, thank god!! I cant wait to use 2k3 server again.

You should ghost or equivalent any HD before wiping it. Obviously your teachers have shown a propensity to not back things up themselves. So you need to do it.

You guys are equally to blame.

Well... Make sure to check those machines as slowly as possible while you're waiting for your boss to get back. About 2 machines a day should do it :) Also, if you have any more important work to do... DO it.

When you boss gets back, maybe he can come talk some sense into those other folks.

Wow. Now THAT is the hallmark of a true systems administrator. Nothing like using the System's own bureaucratic rules against them :)

Yes, we provided instructions. We even gathered all the teachers who were getting upgrades into one room and showed the how to over the projector, so they KNEW how to do it. The probelm is, some of the HDDs were used as cache HDDs in some boxes we put out, so it could be on one of those...

Vivi, yes, Novell truly does suck. We've got a 100mb network, and it's really fast. An install of Office takes about 3 minutes. Nothing bad AT ALL! There's no excuse. They people had word documents. It should take 2 minutes max to copy it all!

same that you cant garantee that backups are taken of local disks, same with if a hd gets broken, if its not on the network drive its gone, some users need it to happen so they start using the network drive

I don't know if you know this, but I learned it (or realized it atleast) that teachers are some of the worst students out there. They can control a class and teach other kids or at least pretend to teach but soon as you try to teach them anything they're just dumbfounded. They either don't want to listen or it goes through their heads, therefore you end up with ****** like this.

I'm right there with ya right now. These people are just so ignorant as to what we tell them. Every year we make a sheet that tells them how to re-setup email if they get a new computer. All they have to do is type in 172.17.0.1. But no! They call me and ask every year. I hope I get that job at the mechanic shop...

Too easy. Take off the rest of the day, sick or whatever, and tell him to set 'em straight tomorrow.

You're welcome!

I was with you until you typed that. If someone in power in your place of employment tells you to do something (even if the person isn't your direct boss), then YES IT IS YOUR JOB to do it.

Heck, it is probably your job to make it impossible for the teachers to save onto their hard drive. But you failed at that one too.

Sure, the teachers are stupid and they could have done their job. But that is no excuse for you to ignore your job.

Pretty simple to me

If you want your new computer, back up your files. If your too lazy to back up, and you don't want to lose your files you keep your old POS computer. When you've back up your files and are ready for a new computer call me, otherwize STFU.

Oh, I did it, and I just finished...I'm not happy about it at all, mainly due to the fact that they waited this long, until my boss was out of town (how convient for them) to tell me too...my DIRECT boss would have said "screw them"...how do I know? He's done it before...

And no, it isn't my job to make sure they can't save to their hard drive...I've done my job 100% and I get chewed out, cussed at and yelled at for it...They don't do their job AT ALL and they get to berate me for doing mine!

We just force everyone to run a very locked down account. The only place they can really save files is in My documents and on the network .

I always just "ghosted" a machine before doing anything to it, that way I could recover any data that the user or IT staff missed.

Easy to do really.

That's what their supposed to do here (aside form the locked down account...we push out restrictions through Novell). We even SHOW them how to move the "My Docs" folder so when they save in it, it saves on their network drive...Papers are given out COMPLETE WITH SCREENSHOTS! Worse part? They don't do it...

We do that when we're building a lab or putting out computers, but we just don't have the network space to have more than 3 images at once...

If there is a problem at work, it is your job to solve it. Simple as that. Don't try to pretend it is someone else's job. The "its not my job" excuse is the lamest excuse ever.

Exactly.
