What Obama should say - and FDR did

Listen to the excerpt from FDR's speech in Rachel Maddow's clip.

Her intro puts it in context against Obama's usual lack of fighting the corporatocracy about his speech to the Chamber of Commerce.

It's good to watch, but the FDR clip starts at 1:25.

This is what a President who was not elected by the oligarchy's money sounds like.

IMO, it's one of the best presidential speeches. 'Never has big business been as united in hatred of a man; they are unanimous hating him - and he welcomes their hatred.'

Obama's speech - as her clip points out - is a sad one in contrast. Watch FDR for an inspirational reminder of what the country needs.

FDR makes the claim that 'government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob'.

Something that fits well with today's 35,000+ lobbyists and stranglehold on elections, with Wall Street and Goldman Sachs running the Treasury for both parties.

And at a time that the concentration of wealth and its harm to the country are back at the peaks just before the Great Depression that FDR did a lot to reverse.

Lol, FDR sucked and should be looked to as a reference for what not to do, more so than what to do. At least in terms of economic policy.

"They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me‹and I welcome their hatred."

Amazing how this is just as valid today as 73 years ago. Same talk radio knuckledragging fearmongers trying to divide the USA backed by big business. Obama should make this speech on the anniversary of it on Foxnews to their clueless part of the USA, I am sure there are at least a few intelligent ones left. (maybe)

He never will, his billion dollars to get him elected did not come from his worshipers buying $25 tshirts but the establishment instead to include banking, insurance and other industry.

FDR was more of a corporatist than a socialist.

Not really the corporatists and monopolists came before. I was reading Ayn Rand and she was saying if it weren't for the prior generations of corporate state merger FDR would have had no traction.

No one should doubt Craig's intentions.

What's interesting is how FDR "got things done". In threatening the SCOTUS he trashed the intended separation of powers. In fact FDR became a curious thing, an elected dictator. No one could effectively oppose him, even if it was within their Constitutional purview.

He was in some ways a relatively benign Chavez. He could and did lock up a whole population of people unchallenged even though they were American citizens.

Of course that little exercise was a necessary evil, because if a leader fits a the ideology of a given individual, all evils are necessary.

It's rationalization on a grand scale.

Can you see Obama doing any of that? I bet some of his supporters would like him to. But Obama's days aren't over. His SOTU sounded like a Plan B to me, Plan A being a big failure.

Well, he might have those Teabaggers put into camps. But that's OK, because they deserve it.
