What not to do.

PSA: If you need to dispose of recently-used ashes, be sure to do so in a fire-safe container (i.e. metal) -- ideally one with a lid. Do NOT dump said ashes in cheap plastic flower pots half-filled with potting soil. Moreover, do not keep those cheap, half-filled plastic flower pots directly next to the side of your house and wooden fence if you decide to dispose of your ashes in them (and you shouldn't).

They will smolder silently for 3 days before bursting into flames and trying to take down your house with you in it in the middle of the night, and you will get 2nd degree burns on your fingers when you try to move the now-molten plastic flower pots away from the house and out into the yard.

You've been warned.

These fingers got it the worst.

These two not quite as bad.

Molten flower pots of death.

The corner that caught fire.

From the other side of the fence.

Any major damage to the house?

Not too bad. Just some charred wood siding, and about the same on the fence. I'm just lucky I noticed it while I was still awake. A few hours later and I would've been asleep.

damn buddy. I would recommend using water to make sure any ash is out. Its fun and makes a nice sizzle. A sizzling sound of safety.

yeap. when i grill i put the ashes in a 5 gallon mettle garbage can. then when they are cool spread them around the flower bed, garden and yard.

When i moved into my first farm teh old guy that lived there gave it to me and said it would save my house from burning down. now i know what he was talking about heh.

Glad you and the house are ok though!

I have had the same experience.. sort of. I burned a pile of limbs, leaves and dirt in my back yard one weekend. 3 or 4 days later, I threw an old door on the pile. The next day I looked and the door had caught on fire and was pretty much gone. I was like wtf, the fire had burned out a few days ago. I guess it was pretty hot in the small dirt pile.

It's just a flesh wound

 for the :camera:'s

a few months ago my daughter had a bon fire party in the back yard
just before going to bed, i went out to check the fire, looked like it was completely out, so i put a log in the middle of the fire pit for next time
next morning, the log was burning away, sometime during the night it got hot enough from coals under the ashes (presumably) to start back up

gotta put out fire the way smoky bear and boy scouts do it
Summary: Put out a campfire completely and make sure that the coals on the bottom have cooled. Learn how to put out a campfire from an Eagle Scout in this free camping video.

as a kid i put fireplace ashes in a plastic garbage can, then put it on the back porch. my sister kept saying she smelled smoke for 2 days even when the fireplace was not burning. my cousin came over and went outside and discovered plastic garbage can smoldering big time. I now always make sure my wood stove and bbq ashes are in a metal can covered and far from the house or other flammables objects.

::shakes head:: Darwin would have something to say....

Next time you should just put out the ashes with gasoline, save yourself the waiting 😀

Glad you're ok tho

Just seems like bad luck to me...

How did you know it was in flames? Did you smell it? See the flames out the window? Get woken up by neighbor?

:Q! At least you got to it before it got worse...that's pretty crazy. Your fingers are going to be fuuuuun for a few days!
