I've watched plenty of real fights, and plenty of UFC, cage, pancrase, etc.

Pure martial artists get their ass whipped quickly. Wrestling and ground control is key.

If you want a martial art that can win fights, I'd go with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, since it's a combo of regular Jiu Jitsu and wrestling. The most successful people on there have a strong wrestling background.

By the way, there was some huge thread on another board (actually it was a flame war between 2 boards) about Kung Fu vs. Mixed Martial Arts (UFC style). The thread was long and heated. The Kung Fu side believed in more spiritual things and technique, and believed that with proper technique you can stop any attack. The MMA side believed that you simply cannot stop someone from taking the fight to the ground, and at that point wrestling experience will win.

The battle went back and forth for a while, until finally both sides nominated someone they had faith in to represent their school of thought. One was a highly trained black belt in Kung Fu, while the other was a muscular MMA guy. They scheduled a fight and agreed to videotape the fight.

End result- the MMA guy did exactly what he said was going to happen, he shot in to take the Kung Fu guy down, and the Kung Fu guy blocked but the block did nothing. The MMA guy SLAMMED the other guy down and broke some bones. The whole fight lasted for only a few seconds, it was really just a beatdown.
