What makes someone a good forum member ?

they are not an ass

unless you are MID cause then you are allowed to be an ass, everyplace needs 1

A good combination of intelligence and wit, combined with decent grammar and spelling. The use of "leet speak" greatly reduces their stature in my eyes.

A positive attitude and the abililty to discuss issues inteligently also goes a long way.

People who don't jump on the attack, think about what they're writing, and not rush to judgement. Those who start topics should also think them through - titlewise and overall content.

Best answer thus far. Being a good member for me would be being a bit fake and far less enjoyable than speaking my mind, though I certainly don't actively troll. And yes, ratings are worthless (I have them disabled - finished with popularity contests at 17 when I graduated HS). I had to vote answering tech questions, though 1 & 4 were both good answers. After all, this is a tech board above all else.

Edit: the OP mentioned seniority, which implies post count as well. I think neither makes a difference or even correllates with being a 'good' member. It wouldn't bug me in the least if the forums didn't even list post count, posts per day, or join date.

For people who don't understand why you claim "ratings are stupid", explanation is required in order to make them understand...

Saying "ratings are worthless and stupid because they are worthless and stupid" is not an explanation why you consider them worthless and stupid.

Simple, noobs like you rate people low when you get slammed or get ripped for not using simple things like the search feature.

My answer is "a little bit of each of the above"
as far as starting posts on off topic... do we really need any more YAGT's?! (the correct answer is: YES, as long as Pics are included in the first post)

People who put real and original thought into their posts and don't resort to cursing at other members to try to get their point across, are good forum members.

I only rate people who deserve it or whine about it.

You just earned yourself a 1, please please hold your applause :sun:
