What life advice did your father hand down?

1) Make a living with your mind not your body.

Me - Chemist
Him - Steel fabrication worker

2) Never start a fight, but if one starts finish it as quickly as possible by whatever means necessary.
 
  • No matter what task you do, try your best.
  • Always show up early.
  • Give a pocket knife back to the man in the same fashion he gave it to you. (open or closed)
  • Always watch the horizon for cops, while driving.
  • Don't work in a factory like me.
  • When driving on curvy roads, watch the power lines to see which way the road turns.
  • Always look through the car in front of you's window to see what traffic in front of them are doing. Don't trust their brake lights.
  • If you are being bullied, punch him in the nose. Even if you lose the fight, he won't bug you again.
  • Never turn a steering wheel to its furthest position for very long, especially at high speed. (don't fully understand this one still, but maybe he had a bad experience with some ball joints popping loose)

edit: dad also gave me a million more tips, just this one came to mind. he was a killer dad. and he still supports me when i need it today. thanks dad!

This. I wonder if it was the age...kids depression or soon after?

Pros:
Go to work
Pay your bills
Tell the truth
Stay out of debt
Be polite to people you haven't met
Make sure your SO is covered


Cons:
I won't post.
 
I'm sure my dad gave the usual after school special advice but I don't really remember it. The one thing that did stick out (coming from a career military man):

"You are smart, you have potential. Don't join the military. They take people like you and chew them up. They waste any potential you have."

It took a long time after leaving to have any pride in his service. I don't know if he still feels that way about the military but it did stick with me.
 
Measure twice, cut once.
Hard work never killed anyone.
If a bear is chasing you, you only have to outrun the other guy.
Never trust a politician.
Get a job working for the city, county or state. This way you'll have a pension, unlike me.

I used to think my Dad was full of it, but he was a genius. I miss him every single day.
 
Invest in stocks, but hardly ever check their value.
Don't buy on margin.
Don't mess with married women.
Get your vaccinations.

He didn't care for fools, but if he thought you a fool, you'd never know it.
