  • I you want to get ahead, work harder and smarter than your competition.
  • There is more to being tough than just being able to fight with your fists.
  • Be your own cheerleader. But keep it to yourself. No one likes an egotistical asshole.
  • Be nice and professional to everyone you meet. Even the idiots.
  • Sometimes its better to cut ties and move on than it is to try and keep a sinking ship afloat.
  • Always wear clean underwear. You never know when you will need to go to the hospital and you want the nurses taking care of you, not admiring the racing stripe in your tighty whities.
  • "Son, money can't buy happiness. I know. The best experiences in my life came when I was dirt poor. All money does is make people selfish. So work hard, try to move ahead, but stop and enjoy the stuff that doesn't require money now and again."

My dad was and still is a pretty wise man. He has made some poor decisions in his life. But he is wiser for them.

My dad?

  • Worker harder, not smarter.
  • Be a farmer.
  • Never trust the government.
  • Those computers are evil.
  • Never ask for help.
  • Always have an answer. It doesn't matter if it's right.
  • Respect your elders.
  • You'll never amount to anything unless you are a physical laborer and have a wife and kids.

That is to say, not a damn thing. He's entirely goddamned worthless.

My maternal grandfather, on the other hand... some points similar to edro's list.

  • No matter what task you do, try your best.
  • Figure out what you do well, master it, and make it your life.
  • Always show up early.
  • Give a pocket knife back to the man in the same fashion he gave it to you. (open or closed)
  • Don't be a farmer.
  • Physical labor is for people who can't or won't think.
  • Work smarter, not harder.
  • Find someone who is smarter than you, and who you trust with your life, and make him your best friend.
  • Ask for help judiciously.
  • When driving on curvy roads, watch the power lines to see which way the road turns.
  • Always look through the car in front of you's window to see what traffic in front of them are doing. Don't trust their brake lights.
  • Physically fight only if flight is not viable. Battles are won using your mind, not your hands.
  • You are who you are; don't ever let others convince you otherwise.
  • Respect is earned.

... and so much more.
