What LCD monitors are you guys using? What's the best LCD for me?

This thread isn't about whether or not I should buy one, it's about what one I should get.

Let's say, ~$700, preferably no higher. No smaller than 17". I have an ATI Radeon 9500pro w/ DVI out so I want a monitor with a DVI input.

I do a lot of 2D work - I don't game much any more. Mostly webdesign and programming of one type or another. And lots of writing papers. And of course, I watch DVD's and video files on my computer. Quite a lot, actually. I *do* game, just not a lot. Neverwinter Nights. And Unreal2 (when I get it). And HL2 and Doom3 when they come out.

I don't spend all my time right in front of my monitor - usually when I'm watching a movie I sit back a few feet. I'd like a good viewing angle, because I'm not always in line with the screen; usually, but not always.

I was thinking of the Solarism LM1711

I bought the 19.1" Dell 1900FP (Samsung 191T) last year. I game occasionally, and for the reason I wanted a native 1280x1024 instead of a 1600x1200. I also wanted it to be as large as possible at that resolution. I'm quite happy with it, though there are probably technologically superior models out by now. Good luck!

I've been reading Toms Hardware - they Iiyama AS4314UT got top pick in their christmas LCD roundup. Now, apparently the newer version of the AS4314UTG (and the G doesn't always show up) has a 20ms response time. This was the version that Tom liked so much.

I can get the AS4315 from NewEgg for $475. Which is really good for a 17" LCD screen. Is this the next model up from the 4314? Will it have the excellent response time as well?

I think for the 17" size there's a very popluar Hitachi and Planar model that lots of people on here will vouch for. I don't know why nobody is jumping in to give you better info. Both the hitachi and planar have sub-20 response times and are very popular. I thought you wanted soemthing larger than 17", so I didn't mention them before :)

Yeah, I just read about the Hitachi - it looks quite good, it's the Hitachi CML174B.
You wouldn't, by chance, happen to know what the model of the planar one is, would you?

note: I would like this purchase to last a while. That's another reason why I was looking into the solarism - it is so bright, as the LCD got older and the brightness dimmed, it would still be very bright, comparably...

cheers!

you were thinking wrong.

hang out in the hot deals forum till you see another add on dell lcds. the 1800FP 1900FP and 2000FP are some of the BEST lcd's out right now, and half the people on this forum have them and can vouch for how awsome they are.

I'll disagree. While the 1800FP, 1900FP and 2000FP are absolutely fantastic (I love mine!) and a REAL bargain when Dell deals come along , there's newer tech to go around, especially if he's gaming. Also, to blindly champion the Dell line is a bit misleading, since each of those three models are made by different manufacturers (LG, Samsung, and BenQ, respectively) with wildly different specs. I will say again, though, they they are fantastic values. I may get a second 1900FP for dual-monitor goodness :) I am completely fine with gaming on my 1900FP.

Dell 1800FP for 415 shipped and tax. Its very nice sometimes the text is too small when im too far away. You should try and get a LCD with a DVI connections and get a DVI video card.

Oops /me relizes you already have dvi.

Take a look at the new Planar "PX" series. 700:1 contrast ratio, 250cdm, 25ms response. I'm about to jump on one of those as soon as a deal comes along. They were just released a day or two ago. You can find it at dell for just over $700 now for the 19".

The Hitachi monitors are looking *very* nice... 16ms response time, and 260cd/m2...still, 400:1 contrast ratio...
And they can be had for ~$500. Which is now (unfortunantly, for various reasons) important because I can't spend as much... :-(

wow, this has got to be one of the hardest hardware choices for me to date...

cheers!

Actaully, the hardest part will be seeing the prices drop after you buy it. I paid $1000+ for my 1900FP :)

argh! Maybe I should wait a bit until I can get a 19" with a 16ms response time.
Not that 17" would be a step down for me. It would be a step across...my current monitor is 17" viewable. I measured it.
argh! every once in a while I begin to *hate* buying computer hardware...

cheers...

I'm currently running a Planar CT1904Z. I've had it for about a year and I really like it. I paid about $580 I think on a Dell deal. :D One of the best hardware purchases I've ever made.

Anyone like Viewsonic LCD's anymore? I checked one out at OfficeDepot the other day and compared it to the Samsung 19 inch....the Viewsonic actually blew it away comparativly. It seems a bit brighter and sharper.

That depends. A little bit of fiddling with the controls can make a big difference. However, you probably saw the Samsung 191T model, which is one generation behind and about to be replaced by a newer model.

I have seen some LCDs do video very well, but I'm still settled on a 19" CRT instead of a 17" LCD. My reasoning is because I have little money (it went towards tuition :-/), no job (for now), and I *need* to replace this aging 17" non-flat monitor. I am dismayed that I don't have more and this monitor won't last me any longer, but it looks like your choices all sound very good.

I?m running the Hitachi and think its fantastic. Colors are crisp and clear in DVI mode and ghosting is non existent.

2 thumbs up and if I had anymore thumbs, it would get more :)

I did fiddle with the controls on the Samsung and Viewsonic....I couldn't get the 19 inch Samsung to look any brighter or sharper than the Viewsonic. I also saw a Phillips LCD....didn't even know they made them and it looked great too. The worst one I saw was a Princeton LCD. It was a 19 inch also but man did it suck....tried adjustments on it too to no avail. It was using Analog though.

The anandtech review of the Hitachi CML174 had a few bad things to say about color reproduction.

The Planar PX171 has the same 16ms seek time and brightness and contrast. Does anyone know how it's color reproduction compares to the Hitachi?

cheers...
