I think I missed it up by telling them my current salary. :( They know how little I'm making, which puts them in the position of bargaining power. *sigh*

NEVER give your current salary. even if they ask you how much u make, sidestep it by saying you're looking at a range between xx and yy.

companies usually will not pay significantly more than what u are making in your current job

When I hire people, I require them to give me a "desired salary" figure. It let's me know what they think they're worth.

One book I read said that its good, if you're flexible, to ask for perks. Like a company car. Another example was if your wife's job gets you health benefits, ask for your potential employer if they can pay you more salary instead of the health care benefits they will provide.

Not quite what you're looking for but maybe it'll help.

I friend was surprised by this question at his first contact and he simply said he would like to get what others in the same position/experience were getting. I liked it, because he did not look like an a$$ and he kinda hinted he would not be happy if his salary was lower, even if he did not know what it was.

I look up what is the avg salary in my area in the field I am interviewing for before I go and tell them a number kinda in the middle. In my case it is $50k but that has been only in mock interviews where employers tell you how you did, so far no mention of screwing up in the salary field.

Didn't read the whole thread but when negotiating you NEVER show your hand first.

I would say something like, "I know that your company is fair and will offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with my skills and experience".

Let them make an offer and go from there.
