Despite the reputation poodles are excellent dogs, they don't shed, they're hypo allergenic, and they're smart. Just keep them away from a groomer, and little old ladies. Hell mine had dreads for a while.

Saw a beautiful Black Lab/Great Dane cross at the shelter on the weekend. What a freaking gorgeous and crazily friendly doggy. :)

You said you want a small dog - what are the reasons for a small dog (because some of the relevant reasons for a small dog also apply to picking a breed.) Among the small dogs, there is a huge difference in activity level from one end of the spectrum to the other. How often are you going to walk it? How big is your yard? Is your yard fenced? These latter two could be factors for choosing small dog. However, some breeds of small dogs really need a lot more space to get the exercise that they seem to want. i.e. my miniature pinscher is a big dog in a small dogs body, on Red Bull.

i live in a condo, there's not a lot of room in our house.
we have big back yard, but its not fenced

we plan to walk it daily, or at least try to
two kids will be taking care of it, 13 and 5

Among the other good suggestions, you could also consider Shih Tzu or Lhasa Apso. Most people picture fussy showdog Shih Tzu with ridiculous long coats, but in reality you can keep them clipped short and they are great dogs...small but somehow very sturdy. Lazy most of the time but can be whipped into a frenzy when you want a little entertainment.

You're best bet is to see what's around the shelters. Consider getting an adult dog....puppies are cute, but it's a ton of shenanigans.

Shih Tzu is definitely a great choice as well, don't shed and great family dogs. That's what I had growing up. My Dad was paralyzed waist down and Bandit would lay with him all day but play or be up for a walk any time.

They sneeze a lot though which is weird.

any opinions of the Boston Terrier?

I don't like terriers in general, a little too feisty for me.

Great point. Holy crap minpins are hyper.

Minpins are the worst. My roommate had one and it was the devil. Never stood still, never shut up, and never stopped peeing/pooping. I would have had no problem punting that thing through the uprights, and I love animals.

Do you think he should have stolen the puppy instead of buying it? ::rolleyes:

Or are you one of those "you have to get your dog at the pound to rescue a good dog from death" kind of people? Yes, there are lots of good dogs available at the pound, but it's like going to Goodwill or Salvation Army...you might find what you want...or you might not.

Agree. Hopefully, not from a pet store either.

I quick search on petfinder.com comes up with 1,000s of Boston Terriers, including puppies.

That's probably true, but I doubt he could have gotten any of them without buying them.

I'm not a fan of "puppy mill" stores, but buying from a "home breeder" or kennel that specializes in certain breeds of dogs is much different.

Agreed. Ultimately, an animal is property, and like anything else you own, you should get whatever will meet your requirements and make you happy. If that's something from the pound, great. If not, equally great.

It's good that you got one from a local breeder rather than a pet store. I just wish you'd been able to find a companion at a shelter.

Grats on your puppy btw. :)

Our dogs & cats become "part of the family," not just another piece of property. We're pretty choosy about "who" we adopt.

In past years, we've adopted a couple of dogs/cats from the local pound/shelters/rescue agencies, but have also bought dogs/cats from local people.
