If you had any brains at all, you wouldnt need to rip any DVD if youre making a backup of it... Im not even going to give you details on how to accomplish this just based on your posts and replies. Use google, its your friend and god knows, youre in need of one.

Quite frankly, even if was illegally copying movies, I would never watch a movie more than once and would only be copying them so as to have them for a later date.

Further more, you see, still hypothetically speaking, the fun is in copying a movie, not watching it. The fun is in having hundreds of movies just for the sake of havings hudreds of movies. Frankly I hypothetically hate movies and doubt I will hypothetically ever watch anything on a television that I didn't film.

That said their would be a myraid of other uses for such a setup.

Such as, BACKING UP MY ENTIRE CD COLLECTION ONTO ITUNES!!

Which, last time I checked, I haven't done! And yet I own 200+ legal CD's. And they need to get on iTunes somehow so I can get them all on my iPod.

DVD Ripping was just one example. You could rip music cd's, data cd's, music/data cd's, video cd's, and frankly damn near every cd or dvd ever created.

Open your mind to the would of posibilities that are available with four DVD drives my simple minded friend ;)

edit: anandtech needs a spell checker! i hate spelling!

the point is true backup wouldn't be practical with 4 drives anyways. either you are picking and choosing split points and where to split movies/bonus features to fit over two discs. or u are compressing films which isn't backing up. backing up is just saving vobs or splitting a disc image over two dvds at this point unless you spend on the dual layer discs.

4 dvd drives and piece of crap processor with a half gig or ram will do fine. don't buy an opteron for god's sake.

sounds like the op just got a subscription to netflix.

i highly doubt it is for his own collection, because if he was doing that he would need d/l discs for true backups and with the price of their media, he may as well buy another version of the movie used somewhere.

That said, I also maintain a 3.5+ GPA in college, own my own computer business, own real estate and am buying my first house for myself in five months and am better off financially (mostly my own doing, btw) than you will probably ever be.

That's when I am not working on my novel, photography or writing music.

So yes, one does have to be off a bit mentally to maintain that kind of work ethic ;)

Just ripping data takes little CPU. Having four optical drives is a self evident requirement. Mostly, you'll need HDD space and enough bus bandwidth. 16x DVD ripping is 21.13 MB/s peak speed. A single SATA HBA on PCI w/4 SATAized opticals would be fine as long as the hard drive's controller is on a different bus. You'd need a minimum of two hard drives to rip at full speed. This is something that a RAID5 would be useful for.

Budget? Current rig?

you have no idea where i am at financially. why don't you own your own real estate that you live in too - five mos? computer business -> what is the site i would like to check it out?

please quantify "real estate".

anybody could write a novel, with enough time. photography, lets see some pics.

3.5+ gpa -> what class load?

is your next "biz venture" a video store with all these dvds you are pirating from netflix?

Not to seem negative towards your computer business idea... afterall I did submit a design for your logo although you didn't acknowledge it...

But how are you going to start a computer business when you can't even pick out stuff for you own computer / get yours to work?

Find 4 friends to do it for you, Gor online and play your favorite game, when they're done buy them a spindle(50-100) of blank DVDs as a fee, be happy you didn't spend all that time making the copies, 4TW!

citizendoug, did you give chcarnage the $50 for drawing the logo you're using?

I did offer to.

He was a generous man, however, and said that for the amount of trouble it would be to wire the money overseas that I should buy myself some beer ;)

Cool guy. Cool logo.

I am using it btw. www.campuscomputing.biz if you are curious. Don't worry the store is not open yet so I am not going to be able to sell you anything ;)

What's Humboldt College ?

I use the terms interchangeably.

Since there have not been any doctoral degrees awarded by a state, ahem, univeristy, it feels like more of a college.

Frankly, I suggest you loosen up a bit. Have a beer. Take a vacation. Get laid. Whatever.

Although that could be changing. I remember reading that state universities are now allowed to award doctoral degrees. It's a new thing apparently.

As soon as I see it happen I'll refer to this place as a university.

But, again frankly, I think Humboldt High School would be most appropriate judging by the difficulty of most of my classes ;)
