Logitech X-140 2.0 Speakers - for $30 they work fine with skype and mp3s.

Paradigm Atoms with a Receiver and sub. Only thing I would upgrade is the sub, but it's more because the room sucks and I can't place the sub in a good place than the sub sucking.

Best $700 I ever spent. Well, maybe it's a tie with the 2407.

Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Speakers. I've owned them for about 5 or 6 years. Still strong.

At home, I ran a digital out into my receiver (NAD, and out through a Polk Audio 5.1 setup).

At work, I have a Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 setup which sounds amazingly good, considering...

I have a NAD for my surround sound with Paradigm Titans, Energy surrounds and a Martin Logan Dynamo sub, it does the job.

logitech 2.1 speakers

I've never seen the point to surround sound when all I'm listening to on my computer are tv shows, music, or games.

Used to have a Creative 5.1 system. I had it for for quite awhile until I recently moved and decided that I'm over the whole surround-sound thing. I ended up picking up a Logitech Z623 2.1 setup.

Keeping in mind I'm not any kind of audiophile, I'm using a Creative 5.1 system. I don't know the model number, but I've had them since 2004 or so. I'm happy with the sound.

You probably have the same set I do. It was reasonably priced and the sound is decent.

Logitech 2.1's are good for $100, or Klipch promedia 2.1's if you can find them. Of course if you want audiophile quality sound you should spring for a dedicated amp, and bookshelf speakers, or powered monitors.

M-Audio Studiophile AV-40 (powered) monitors. They were about $150, very happy with them. There is no sub, though, if you're looking for that.

The computer speakers I have at home are the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 set iirc.

Pretty big set, and didn't feel like dragging those with me to this school and having them take the space they do. Considering everything had to fit in a sedan and I'm living in a hotel room, space was a concern.

Thought I'd be fine with headphones the entire time for computer use. When playing games I prefer the virtual surround headset I have, as there is more immersion than having a 5.1 set with all the speakers in front of you.

Picked up the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set recently on sale at Best Buy, have to say, I'm loving these. And I can barely use what the set offers, as again, I'm in a hotel room. These things can push out massive volume on mp3 files, and I have the sub setting extremely low. Not sure if they can be heard outside these walls, but don't feel like agitating neighbors.

Great 2.1 set, and it may actually be better for most purposes, especially since a 5.1 set isn't all that impressive when you have them set up with minimal surround style, all spread out in front of you.
Once I get back home, and hopefully get a chance to finally move into my own place then, not sure what I'm going to do to. Going to have to decide between the two sets or find uses for both. hmm

Some Altec Lansing ones I picked up years ago. I still plug them in all the time when I move but I never use them anymore. I use my audio technica A700s 100% of the time now.

I won't buy another Klipsch product. The iFi sounded great, but when the dock decided to quit (on its own), it rendered the entire set inoperable. The dock has volume and sub controls, and apparently if it goes haywire, so does everything else. Klipsch did not have any replacements, did not intend to make any more available, and basically told me to find a repair shop - essentially telling me to fuck myself.

I'm not the only one that had that problem, either. It's all over their forums and easily found with a google search. They should have recalled or at least stocked adequate dock replacements. Mine blew up like 2.5 or 3 years after I bought them, so I thought buying the dock was reasonable, but not having any support whatsoever was not what I'd expect for a premium-priced product.

I'd avoid Klipsch, although I realize I'm just a single data point. There are better companies competing for your money.

It's worth noting OP that you do not need a subwoofer to have good bass response in your system. A decent set of bookshelf speaker will provide plenty of mid-bass.

Using a 4+ year old set of 2.1 Creative Inspire T3000 speakers. For my non audio self they sound great, have only had to clean the contacts in the volume controller once about 18 months ago to solve a volume issue.
